Another 01 Raptor with possible tranny failure..questions!
#1
I have had my 01 Raptor for over a year now, and ran the absolute **** out of it. Never had a single major problem. Went riding on Sat. and only in 2nd gear it feels like a chain jumping teeth on a sprocket. It will pop a few time through 2nd gear. It does it pretty consistently in 2nd gear only. The other gears are fine, and the bike ran fine other than that. Did I lose teeth off the 2nd gear? Anyone have an idea what happened? I planned on tearing it down for a cam, piston, ported head install anyways this winter. If it is the tranny then should I go with the Fortin gears, or the 02 gears? Whos the best to get the parts from? Help!

It sounds like you rounded off the 2nd gear dogs
Go with the 02 gear set. It's cheaper than a fortin 2nd gear & the ratios are better.

I did miss 2nd gear many many times with the stock shifter while getting after it real hard in the sand drag racing. After I put the ProDesign on I've maybe missed it 2 times. So go with the 02 gears huh? I do like how the 02s gears are setup. Anything else to replace while in there? One way starter bearing, or oil pump gear? Sounds like those can fail pretty often also. I will be doing a piston, cam, bored, ported head while it's apart. Any other tips guys? I'm in KC and there's no local shops that I know of other than the dealers(and they are not touching my bike). I will probably do all the labor myself except porting the head, valve job, and boring cylinder.

If it was me, I would probably update the one-way starter parts too; good idea. Mine went while I was riding, kind of sucks. If you replace them, you would have a spare (old one) for when it goes out on the trail!

Have any of you tried moddifying the shift star? I did this on my banshee and haven't missed a shift since.

hey--- if you have never seen the "dogs", what we are all talking about--go to www.bikebandit.com and look up the factory gearson an 01 and then an 02. 4 dogs on the 02 and only 3 on the 01. yep, you'll have to replace the mating gear and quite possibly- check out the reverse gear too. id only stick to replacing those gears cause if you did the whole 02 setup, it'd be around $1500
forget the 01's before tranny update, its like driving a porsche with a rock bouncing around inside the tranny!

Are you sure it's the tranny? Mine skipped the other day in 2nd gear, and I noticed the front sprocket teeth were worn down pretty badly. I am waiting for my new 12 tooth sprocket to arrive any day now. Hopefully it's the sprocket.
