2003 Grizzly Fuel Economy

Hey all,
Just curious as to what kind of kms / miles owners are getting off a full tank with the Grizzly.
I only have 40 kms on the bike (brand new as of Thursday) and already I'm down to the last bar on the display. Is there a huge bottom end of that tank?!? I was hoping to pull of close to 90 - 100 kms / 55 - 60 or so miles. I haven't been doing any hard riding or anything. Moslty 2WD on flat land. Once in a while I will put it into 4WD to over the beaver dams, but only for about 3 mins at a time.
Any info is greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance,
-Jeff

Canadian, how's it going? I have 200 miles on mine so far and the gas mileage is very good. I think it will do about 80 miles pretty easy. Anyway, mine really drank the gas for the first tank or two, but after a few hours on the machine it will really start to get better. So don't worry, it will get much better after about 5-10 hours on the engine. Enjoy!

That's correct. Any internal combustion engine will use more gas during the break-in process. Just don't hammer the throttle and try and vary your speed for the first couple of tanks of gas. Using the 4wd as you have is also a good idea. I would wait until the 3rd or 4th tank before you really use it to it's full potential. People have varying opinions on breaking a motor in, but I beleive you will burn oil more if you ignore the break in process. Have fun, Yamaha's are basically bullet proof. I have a Kodiak and have beat the living #$@! out of it and it runs like a champ. Of course doing regular oil changes, with Yamalube, is also a good insurance policy. A few extra bucks for the right oil will save thousands down the road.

These guys are right...any new motor will get better gas mileage after it is broken in. But I have noticed that the gas guage drops faster for the first two bars than it does for the last two. My guage showed about half a tank the other day and it only took about a gallon to fill it.

Good stuff.
Well that makes me feel better.
As it looks right now, I will only get about 60 kms per tank. Just guessing tho.
Thanks for the info guys!

I have only put 3 tanks thourgh my 03 Grizzly. The first tank was burned by my 14 year old daughter riding around the alfalfa field - not real hard riding but it only got 10.7 mpg. The second tank was in the sand dunes and it got 12 mpg. The third tank was in the mountains riding double with my wife and it got 14.9 mpg. The riding conditions vary but I continue to get better mileage with each tank. I wonder why these ATVs get such poor mileage. Is it the variable speed transmission or the soft tires? My truck weighing 7500 pounds pulling 2000 pounds of trailer and 4 wheelers gets better gas mileage at 70 mph than a 600 pound ATV at 30 mph ???

Take a look at the shape of the gas tank. It is triangular in shape, with the bottom of the tank being bigger. The gas will go down fast in the first couple of bars but you have an awsome reserve on this tank. I think that it was a good idea that yammy did it that way. I know that i have been out in the middle of NOWHERE and wondering if i was going to run out of gas.....it is nice to know that you have a great reserve to get you home!
I average about 70-80 miles per tank. That is with ***** to the wall riding, deep mud, and major climbing and playing!
If you get the chance.....run your tank to the reserve....note the mileage...measure the amount that you use to refill it. You will see that you have a great amount left in the reserve.
Hope that helps.
