My brother just built a banshee that he got blown up. He has just about a brand new engine and it won't start. We have changed stators, messed with the carbs, and everything else we could think of. It throws a spark over an inch and a half. It gets plenty of fuel. We bought cylinders off ebay and got Wiseco pistons and crank.
Any suggestions???

Here is where I would start. Take the pipes back off and check to see if they are clogged. It may sound funny but I have had birds build nests in 2-stroke pipes while I sent my cylinder off to have it reniked. Next, make sure the reeds are good.
Pour a little 2-stroke oil in each cylinder then slowly turn the engine over with the spark plugs removed. Then put your finger over the plug hole and see if there is enough compression to blow it off.
If you don't have an exhaust restriction, are getting fire through the plugs, are getting fuel, and have compression, it should run. You might have to pull it to start it. I have had a couple of 2-strokes that I have rebuilt that had to be pulled to start them and I have no reason why. Be careful when doing this. A 2-stroke can fire up, stand in the air, and run over the pull vehicle before you know it (trust me this has happened many more times than I care to count).

Any chance that the on/off toggle switch is wired wrong or just on off? A while ago before I knew my machine very well, I spent about an hour looking and taking apart everything before I realized that the on/off switch was bumped a little and was on off. It pissed me off and made me happy at the same time. Dont look over the problem. If the engine is almost new, its probably something small wrong with it.

Like Alky said... If you got the main components it should fire. It would be good to throw a compression gauge on there and make sure you have at least 100 PSI or so. Defiantely check the reeds.... Bad reeds = no start. Make sure the flywheel didn't sheer the key and "jump" timing on you. You can use ether to get it started but go REAL easy on that stuff. 2 strokes are pretty simple just go through each system one by one and make sure they are all good.

 

Wyo, thanks I had forgot about the timing. If the timing is too far advanced, the engine will try to "kickback" while kicking it over. If it is too far retarded, it just won't start. Since you put a new crank in it, it is possible you left the flywheel key out.

Okay guys, we took off the back exhaust and now it runs for about one or two seconds. We already tried pull starting behind my 250r. It has a new switch. The flywheel key is new. I think the only thing we didn't replace was the reeds, because some guy at a shop said that unless they're cracked, they're good yet. Could it be the reeds?

it still could be the reeds . i know its a pain in the a@@ to take them off but get them off and hold the up to some light if you see any light through the reed contact area they are bad or need to be fliped . hope everyones replies help to find your prob .

 

i read on another post about a cross over tube between the carbs . might check that also ?

 

I forgot about the crossover tube also. There should be a tube that connects the carbs. It sits right in front of the slides, right above the venturi. Approx 2.5" long and about 5/16" hose. It is a pain to start without this tube because it allows the rightside carb to pull fuel when the choke is on.
