I test drove a stripped '99 v6 5speed 4x4 when it was new. It would scratch third gear. I was impressed. I have driven the v6 auto and as I said, they are gutless.

Quadrookie, I have heard that ford was supposed to release a v6 diesel for the f150 ever since 99. I heard it was supposed to be offered in 2001, then 2002, 2003 now 2005-6. It will be cool, but I'll believe it when I see it. Can the engine come out the top or is it like the new mustangs? Is the "recall" on all 5.4's or just certain years? 300 I6. The most indestructable engine ever built.

Powerstroke is the way to go. I have crossed the scales in my 96 (old powerstroke engine. They updated in 99) weighing in at 32250lbs. This is truck, trailer, load. I made probably 2 dozen 30 mile trips like this over the period of 3 days. Of the 113,xxx miles on it, probably 50,000 has been with a trailer. And my friends wonder why it is at the tranny shop when their chevys that have only pulled utility trailers don't have to be rebuilt until 125,000.

If you want a really cheap one...first get a K&N filter to go in the stock canister, then go buy some silver reflective heat tape(for air duct work and such) and completly wrap the whole intake tube and the filter housing with it. This will keep your air entering your motor from being heated by the motor itself. Cooler air = more HP. I noticed a difference emediatly after doing this. A mag did a test and this combo got more HP than the K&N open element system thingy(cant remember what its called). Then I would go chip and then exaust. Exaust is next on my list if I ever get $$$ again LOL.

AlkyBurninX...

Yes, the 6cyl. definately needs to be a 5-speed, and preferably 3.55 gear ratio. As far as the delay on the F-150 diesel, I think the main reason is they struggled with emission concerns and unlike some companies, they want to make sure the bugs are out before releasing it.The 5.4 can come out the top but you really think the techs are going to do it that way? It only pays like 9 hours?-I think. anyway they are complaining that its not enough time to do it that way. The exact years, and build dates on the 5.4 head problems I will have to check on for sure, I can post later if you wish. The powerstroke is history also, if you hadn';t heard, as of a couple months ago, they are gone, and alot of people who had 03' p/u's ordered were notified that they would instead have the new 6.0L diesel(with tons more torque and H.P. than the powerstroke, and backed by a new Torqshift transmission) This motor destroys all competition in every catagory and is more efficient and quieter. The oil filter is a drop-in cartridge on top of the motor and the turbo is unique in that it doesn't have to build up its boost, it has the full boost from the word go!! The powerstroke WILL still be available in the E series though. Yes the boys at Ford (actually the company Blue Diamond is responsible for Fords diesel division now) has definatly got a leg up on the competitors for a while.
Anytime you guys need info on Ford, just holler if I don't know, I can probably find out.

Demon--the chip is a good way to mod, but I suggest not doing it while still under warranty, we have seen quite a few old boys get screwed out of alot of money (especially on powerstrokes) because their turbos or engines had problems caused by the power chips, and in most cases the owners didn't even know they were inn the vehicle. Besides, not many people need much more power than the powerstroke gives anyway, if they do, then they need to step up to a LN series truck.

Quadrookie, thanks for the info. Man its good to know a ford tech because I am always curious. I have read about the 6.0L. Is it aluminum headed like the Duramax? Turbo that has no lag!!!! That would be awesome!!! The post99 engine takes for ever to build boost with the intercooler and wastegate.
Torqshift? What happened to the good ol E4OD with the JUNK torque converters (mine is in the shop because the converter is coming apart)? I have heard Allison will start building Ford's heavy duty tranny as well as GM. Will the Torqshift be made by them? Are they still going to make the E4OD/4R100? I need the planetarys for my newest C6 build up for my '68.
I hate cartridge filters!
I would be interested in info on the 5.4 head problems since my sister owns a 5.4 truck.

Thanks for the info. I try to soak up everything I can about atv's, trucks, etc.

The 6.0 is all iron,I dont remember for sure who builds the torqshift, but its only put behind the new deisel. The e4od/4r100 will still be used as far as I know in the gas engines. I also learned today that the 4.6 also is having some similar head probs. I'll research a little more and hopefully get more details for you.

We have a '99 F150 extended cab Triton V8 5.4L 4x4. We found the 99's were, I think, the first to have both rear doors, otherwise they only have a third door--we get a lot of use out of that. We get around 17-18mpg not hauling, and consistently get 13-14mpg hauling two to three fourwheelers. We have a rather odd way of using a 5x8 trailer for two utility quads (pic on photo page or on link below--lol), and it still gets this gas mileage. It's been a great pickup and hasn't been lacking in power or ability so far. We did have one rather odd problem with the power steering pump that had to be replaced, but it was under warranty, so no big deal. Hasn't cost anything except for normal maintenance. 4wheel drive has worked great. Good buy, I think.

My dad bought a used 82 f150 4x4 with 100,000 miles on it allready back in '88, he put 100,000 miles on it and gave it me when I got my license in '93, I put 100,000 miles on it before giving it back to him in '97 when he sold it for double what he paid. We still know the owner and he put another 125,000 miles on it before the rear blew out. That was 1 1/2 years ago, and I see this truck on the road pretty often it must have close to 500,000 miles on it now, she aint as pretty now as when I had her (2-tone blue with nice AR rims and 31-10.50 tires). Damn I miss that truck!!

Only problem I ever had was at about 325,000 the catalytic converter clogged and blew out, took the rest of exhaust with it...

I am a firm believer in the Inline 6!!!! 300's rock!

ATVGurl....

Where are you at in Iowa?? I'm 25 miles south of D.M. I'm fairly new to atv'ing, and am wanting to go to Bluff Creek. It looks like a blast and I've heard it is the best place in Iowa to ride. I wish I could get my wife involved in the sport, maybe some day.

Last time I checked the V-6 only had about 20hp less than the V-8, and the gas milage differed accordingly. Simply goto www.cars.com and goto prices and research then you can research as much as you like.

Quadrookie,

Bluff Creek is by far the best 'legal' place to ride in Iowa that I've found so far! You should definately go. Beware of the terrain since you're not familiar--don't go over a hill if you don't know what's on the other side--sometimes there's nothing! We haven't been there in a while and are due for a trip. I can let you know next time we are going, or let us know if you plan to go as well. You are closer than we are--we're ~40 miles north of DM. angcm78@yahoo.com

PS) are you in the Iowa OHV Association? If not, you should join--it's only $10/year and our big annual meeting is coming up in January that is cool (free food, prizes, etc.). Go here if you want more info on it.
