I have changed my oil after every ride on my 686 which is only 4 times. My last ride was at Glamis 6 weeks ago. I just changed the oil today and it is black after just one weekend. My buddies Honda oil looks clean after the same amount of riding. What the he11. ????

Oil contamination in 4 strokes occurs from the byproducts of combustion. Primarily the rings are responsible for sealing the combustion chamber from the crankcase. If your oil becomes black faster than it should it could be caused by several things.
Compression rings not seated properly.
Oil control rings not scraping the cylinder wall of excess oil, this usually results in higher than normal oil consumption.
Cylinder wall finish incorrect, too much oil being retained on cylinder walls.
High heat, breaking the oil additives and base stock down, causing the black appearance.
Piston to cylinder wall clearance too great, rings can't do their job properly. Forged pistons require more clearance cold. This is why an engine with forged pistons should be warmed up before a load or high RPM is applied.
Larger bores = more surface area. Larger bores will contaminate oil at a faster rate just because of the area's involved.

my average Glamis trip consists of about 20 drag races up Oldsmobile Hill, about 20 races at The Drags, and hard dune rides that add up to 150 miles on the GPS. I think I will do a compression check. Can I use the generic PepBoys compression tester?? My other thought is valve guides. Thanks for the response truckracer.

of course i know nothing about a 400ex but on the raptor you drain the oil from the engine and put it back in the tank maybe there is still some left in the hoses or engine that turns the new oil blacker.....mine does the same thing. could be cause the engine is over 200cc bigger so it uses more oil and turns it blacker faster. if anyone has an answer let me know?????
