Default Valve question

Just curious about the raptor and it's 5 valves. How many are slated for intake and how many for exhaust?

3 in, 2 out. Seems the intake valves usually tighten up and the exhaust valves seem to stay in tolerance.

Can you explain where shims go? I see lots of threads about valve checking/adjustment but I'm not sure where this measurement takes place...I assume it is between the cam and the rocker arm but I'm just learning about this stuff

Thanks Bing that is a great link. It looks like it might have been taken directly out of the raptor spec/repair manual. From what I see there a valve adjustment looks pretty easy...one thing though: it says to tighten the locknut to 10 ft lbs. What do you use to tell how tight you are making it? I assume you have to use some special torque wrench, are they expensive?

Valve adjustments are easy,,,yes, however if done wrong they can be expensive. Having the right tools is the best idea. Torque wrenches come in all sizes and qualities, and are a necessity in an ATV garage, unless you choose to get 'bent over' by the dealer for your maintinence. After mine broke, I developed my own personal torque wrist. This is not reccomended, however!
