Default Why Raptor starter clutches fail: we think we have the answer but need your input !

Team

My buddy Wayne has been pouring over several failed starter one way gear assemblies, there have been several posts that its all to do with the inner hub onto which the one way bearing assembly "grips" being soft or lacking "hardness" and hence galling and then tearing up the clutch assemblies, whilst appearing plausible we think that there is alot more to it than just the inner hub.............

When Wayne dismantled the failed one way sprag assembly the following was noted:

1/ there was as much wear on the outer hub, which the sprag rollers also grip onto, as there was on the inner drive gear wheel hub ! this is a fully hardened bearing surface.

2/ the retainer spring was broken

Considering both facts it seems likely that the main reason for failure is the light retainer spring letting go that taht then allows the one way rollers to chatter back and forth on both drive surfaces during enegagement, this also means that the stater tends assembly tends to "slip" around the hubs chewing them up until the one way finally locks rather than spinning up, over coming the spring tension then locking quickly onto the drive surfaces.

What we need is feed back from those of you who have changed out your own starters:

1/ was the retainer spring broken ?

2/ is the outer hub bearing surface on your clutch unit chewed up ?

3/ do the one way rollers have wear on both faces, not just the one that engages the inner gear wheel hub ?

4/ anyone in the bearing industry out there that can source a better quality replacement spring for the one way units ?

My answers to your questions from my experience with my starter assy.

1/ was the retainer spring broken ? no

2/ is the outer hub bearing surface on your clutch unit chewed up ?no

3/ do the one way rollers have wear on both faces, not just the one that engages the inner gear wheel hub ?no, only the inner face that rides in the gear its self. Actually, I have replaced mine 2 times, and and on the 3rd time I used both wore sprags, i found enough good one way rollers to make a good sprag assembly.

4/ anyone in the bearing industry out there that can source a better quality replacement spring for the one way units ? ????good question
