I have had a similar problem with mine but without the poping and grinding. Mine usualy won't engage till I let of the clutch. I know that when I bought it new I did not have to let the clutch out.

i have the exact same problem, when i switch to reverse it will not engage until i let the clutch out. and it pop, i guess half into reverse, makes this loud grinding noise until i push the shifter down again while it is grinding. this usually doesn't seem to happen when i work the clutch while im warming the quad up tho.

It could be a couple of things, its somewhat normal though

The clutch sounds like its dragging, not disengaging enough, it may need a slight adjustment or worn. The clutch is a wet clutch and prone to act differently with different oil and at different temperature so you want to adjust it to where its right when the quad is fully warmed. The dealer may have adjusted it for you but not ridden it, he may have put a different oil in it also.

Mines also does the same thing, reverse wont engage unless I keep the gear shifter pressed and release the clutch a bit. I also get a big pop when going into first gear none of this was so until about after 6-7 hours of use on my new quad, I thought it was normal breaking in and in the 10 hour service i would let techs know and it would be adjusted, but no luck dealer said it was normal and after arguing for two hours and asking them to explain why it didnt do it the first few hours they had no answer. So I will never take it back to them and deciced to buy a manual, I adjusted the clutch somewhat (its alot better but still not like new) I tried removing some slack from the the lever but that made it worse, but giving it slack to the point were its almost engage, (while holding the lever in).and checking by lifting the rear of the quad and adjusting to the point the wheels almost start to spin has helped it out on mines. The adjustment has left it to were if I just bearly release the lever it starts to engage. But the poping into 1st is noticable less......before it sounded like I was going to break something.
