I bought my wife a 03 Kodiak 400 4X4. My wife likes to trail ride and get into moderate terrain. Hills and obsticles are it. She does not like mud. For that type riding the Kodiak 400 4X4 is a great machine. It's light and easy to operate. Fully automatic with in/out 4 wheel drive. If your girlfriend's preference is like I described, the Kodiak will be a fine machine.

Hey man, steer clear of the yamaha kodiak 400.

you can check out my post "worst purchase ever" under yamaha kodiak

i spent a lot of money on 2 atv's last fall and thank god that only one of them was a yamaha.

research yamaha well on their customer service- look at some of the problems on the raptor tranny, the letters to yamaha, and yamaha's replies. if you do you will see exactly how many upset owners there are and how the craftsmanship is poor (see the thread about the crooked frames) and the customer service is even poorer.

word of advice- don't make the same mistake i did. my girlfriend hates the bike. i hate the bike. it has been the most stressfull purchasing experience ever. my problems from day one have still not been fixed and i bought the bike in august. it's been taken apart and put back together so many times it just rattles everywhere at an idle.
yamaha keeps promising to fix it properly but to date nothing has been fixed. i called the dealer with the complaint the day i got home.

dude, you don't need this.
your gfriend doesn't need it either.

don't buy it- buy anything but the kodiak 400 2003

I bought a 2000 Kodiak back in 99 when they first came out. Just a minor choke problem so far. Great machine, no regrets.

I dont own one but I have always heard that they are great machines, that are very reliable. You might also want to look at the Suzuki Eiger 400 4x4 auto, I have heard that the machine is a great ride and very reliable, and also does not cost as much as the Kodiak. Either one would be a excellent choice I believe.

You may want to read the post I left a few day ago (Jan 18th). Do a search on "Attention!!!!!! 2003 Kodiak Owners". I have been having some problems with the servo motor on mine. The servo motor is the electric motor that actually switches the Kodiak in and out of 4wd.

Other than the servo motor, everything else has held up great. But you will definately want to read and consider that post. When I haven't had the Kodiak in the shop with the servo problems, It has been a great atv to ride.
