talk about a surprise sitting at the line ready to go in 1st hit it shift and go backwards

If the lever springs back without the cable on it make sure the "travel" of the lever is the same with the cable on. The spring is behind the lever, if its hooked on the lever it should "coil up" when the lever is moved forward.

Well, that explains alot, it appears that the spring isn't there at all.... it must have been lost when we disassembled the bike.

I'll try to locate it and see what happens. It sounds like its pretty straight forward as to how to put it on.
