Default Overheating Raptor issues???

Guys,
The info is appreciated. Everyone is entitled to what they feel is the best setup. But for the time being, making max power isn't the issue. I'm looking to break in a new tranny and motor without destroying it. The original problem was an extremely lean situation it seems. I spoke with WB today and they seemed to reiterate all the points already made here.
Airraptor, I appreciate your opinion, but please dont waste space on my forum question with your opinions about others. I appreciate every bit of info that you have given, just keep the other stuff away from me, other than that I'll take anything you have to offer.
Dumont and 14mins, I appreciate the info, I might go up on the pilots just to see what happens after I get it broken in, for the time being that's the next objective.

Default Overheating Raptor issues???

Time out from this post for 1 minute.

Airraptor- I spent all day trying to come up with a better word to use (stupid idiot) but could not come up with one. my answers come from actual observations of my motors and others. There is a wealth of knowlege to be had from here. A year ago i did not know a lot about raptors, since that time mine has been apart 10 times, i have spend many days with Bob Craycraft and his brother. hundreds of raptor have come to my house to ride and race and i have attended many, many races. You can not get your stories right. Does trinity recomend 22.5 or 25's??? You contidict yourself.

Pilots 22.5= stock motor or trinty head work?? The 2 heads that i saw cc'd did not have enough material removed to flow better

pilots 25= moderate head work, or higher comp stock bore. I would put these on my machines at the minimun if you are piped/jetted and felt like something was wrong at tip in. You can adjust srews if a little rich

pilots-27.5 If you have a high flowing motor you will need them (craycraft recomends them) Sparks recomeends them or 30's

It is not a big or costly issue to try the pilots out. No harm in trying and you will probably bennift from then. You will learn more about tuning your quad by trying them

Default Overheating Raptor issues???

Air- i am perfect to 5000 rpm then i am lean on every dyno that i have been on. I need to go to FCR's now. I have maxed out main jets on my current set-up. I have seen some that did not need larger pilots, that had them in there. Some of that can be taken care of with the air/fuel screws

I am not bashing Trinity, i have had 1 of there motors and been around many other trinity motors. I have been/worked on 3 of them besides mine. They make one big killer mistake on all of them that i have seen. I also do not believe that they do EVERY head on a flow bench. I also do not believe they have ever disected a head to see what can be done. I have a new head that is going to blow away all others debuting in short whil;e on my old 01 raptor with the 2003 top=end. In the end we are all in it for the fun. They are resting on the a$$, do to all the slick advertising that they did in the past. IMO they are not even in the top 5 as builders of raptors anymore. Harry has the ability, the equiptment and does not utilize it. They were killed at FSW's and they had 5 quads the week before getting them ready to compete.

back to the topic.....don't try to diagnose your bike while it is on the stand. It WILL get hot without air going over the radiator. When I broke in my cam I had a fan on the radiator and the exhaust was so hot I melted my right side filter (no airbox at the time). And yes I was jetted correctly. Start it up and ride it. Adjust jets accordingly. Once you have the mains and needles dialed in you can F around with the fuel screws and pilots. For instance....if you have poping on deceleration you should try to back out the fuel screws to cure that bottom end lean condition. If you go past 4 turns out you will need to bump up to 25 pilots and so on up to 27.5.

My bike currently likes 22.5 pilots with fuel screws L 2.75 and R 3.0 turns out.

every bike is different. my buddies bike likes 25 pilots.

Blueleader,
Thank you for bringing this back to the topic at hand. Its unfortunate that two such knowledgable guys cannot keep there personal stuff off the valuable space of these forums. They started out with great info. As per the problem at hand. I'm not going to invest any more time into the set up till I get it off the stand.
It seems that you feel that the pilots should stay were they are at stock which I gather 22.5. I believe it came back with the air screws out three turns. This is new to me. I've played around with main jets before. But pilots and air/fuel screws is virgin territory for me. I understand the concept of the jets and needles, but the screws I'm still a little fuzzy on. Basically a metering device? The further out, the more air/fuel can flow?
Why use the screws, is the adjustment more fine than changing jets? I'm hungry for info. Thanks for all that have replied.

derek
