It has been said that they all have a poor design, and that for that year there were no corrections made. Although there are SOME on here that still have thier 01' gears still in tact.

I made this post a little while ago:

YOU will have to pay for it to be fixed, Yamaha says its not a problem.
Agreed. All will eventually fail....primarily depending on how the machine is treated and how much reverse is used.

If you are going to buy a used quad, you are taking a chance no matter if it's a 01 or a 04. If you can get a 01 at a good price, buy it, you won't be dissappointed. Just make sure you test drive it. Check for starter noise, noise in the trany. Take someone with you that knows about Raptors or quads in general, but don't be afraid to buy a 01 just because it's a 01.

I've heard anywhere between 375 and 700. Just depends on where you go, and what you get with the kit. Some have just the gears, some have the gears with the gaskets, and some have the gears with the gaskets, and some of the bearings. Check around, see what you find. I too got mine second hand, and have no clue as to whether or not mine as 01' or 02' gears. As far as I know though chances are good its the 01' gears. Anyway, I've had mine for 5 months now, and I love it. Other than the paranoia of the chance of the trans going out eventually I'm very pleased. I will say though knowing what I know now I would have spent and extra 500-600 on the 02's and been done with it. When I'm in the market for another quad chances are good I'll get another raptor.

About right, usually for 350 your are just getting the actual tranny parts, no gaskets, no shift fork 1 (which should be changed, and will have to be if the tranny is already blown) You can do it with this kit but plan on plopping out a few more duckets for simple stuff like gaskets, oil filter and things. But you can get away with re-using the 01 reverse set and save some cash

The $700 alba kit is soup to nuts, just about every collar, gasket or o-ring you would touch doing the job, even the little copper washer gaskets for the oil lines and oil filter.

Even with the cheaper kit which includes just the required parts to switch over you will end up $500 or more all said and done if done right.

Love thier bikes/quads....hate their buisness practices.......

My raptor has been pretty good lately, but still is very much in the one ride club. Last 4 rides... Choke plunger plastic nut... Front wheel bearings... Swingarm pivot bearings.... Axle locknut (my original LSR nut is crap)...

Only thing I havent touched or had to screw with is the battery and clutch (I think I just heard both of them take a **** in the garage as I typed)

This ride its going to be Chain sliders and rollers, then we will start over again with axle bearings.

Wait until you have too replace the clutch pack. THE ENGINE has too be unbolted and moved just too get the cover off. A 30 minute job turns into 3 hours. I hate beating axle bearings out. My Raptor needs an unemployed and single man just too put in the time maintaining it. On the other hand, it needs a constant supply of cash too feed on. I can't imagine several years down the road when it may actually be less reliable than now...
