Never heard about any probs with reverse but there are other problems with the 2001 Raptors like bad transmission (2nd gear), weak axle, tie rods, and clutch are the main ones. I'd recommend buying a 2002. Cept in 2002 they put a rev limiter on reverse which makes it almost useless. If you find a good deal on a 2001 Raptor with the 2002 transmission conversion done to it I'd take it cause that was the one major problem. The other ones are just little problems, not much to worry cause you rarly run into problems with them unless you abuse the crap outta them. Seems like everyone is having problems with the tranny no matter how you run it though. Good luck.

How come the rev limiter hurts reverse so bad?

I have 2-2001 Raptors and so far I love them. I have not had any problems with reverse or the transmissions yet. But I do agree with people when they talk about the "false neutral". I don't know if that is a 100% precursor to transmission failure but... So far so good!

You can just by-pass the reverse rev limiter on the 02and 03 models. Very easy and free.

do all the 2001 raptors have bad 2nd gears? or is it only on some of them? and if they all are bad will yamaha cover that for free or do you have to pay alotta money to get the newer tranny?

All 01s are bad, some might last longer than other depending on how you ride.

YOU will have to pay for it to be fixed, Yamaha says its not a problem.
