Raptor Engine Vibration
#11
Thanks for the replies. I tightened the motor mounts the other day and it didn't seem to make any difference. Unless I missed one. There's just three? Top, front bottom, and swingarm bolt right? I'll double check it tomorrow.
Maybe my AC nerf bars amplify the vibrations since they mount to one of the motor mounts and back to the frame where the pegs mount?
I've got Renthal bars, but after an hour of riding, I can't wait to get off the thing. I don't know, maybe the Raptor is just not for me. I wish I could ride someone else's and compare it to mine.
I've ridden various 200cc 3 wheelers, a Honda Recon, a Blaster, and my 250cc 2 stroke Quadracer, and none of them vibrated this bad. That's why I wondered about the counter balancer.

MrBones, your Raptor should not vibrate that much. Being that its used, I'd definately pop off the valve adjusting covers and adjust the valves, maybe they were adjusted by an idiot. Also, is the vibration only when riding or sitting still? A chain that is adjusted too tight, especially a dry worn out one, will cause excessive vibration.

It's ok at idle. The vibration gets worse the more you rev it, all in neutral and not moving. After quarter throttle, the vibration has peaked and doesnt' seem to get worse. But by that time, it's pretty bad.
The rear chain tension was very loose when I got it. I readjusted it, but it was doing the excessice vibration before. I'll check the valve clearance. I've changed the spark plug and the oil, but haven't had time check the clearance. I hope that's it.
Intake .10-.15mm, Exhaust .15-.20 mm at TDC?

I've got a reciept from a Yamaha dealer fixing the tranny with '02 gears and also installing a new crankshaft, piston and rings. Total cost was $2100. That was in July '01. Other than that, I don't know. I would hope the engine was put together properly, unless something else has gone wrong with it since then.

I've got Renthal bars with some dual-density gel grips. I've seen those vibration dampeners that go in the bars for $40 at Dennis Kirk. Do they really work? Anyone try them?
I checked the valve clearance. The exhaust valves were in spec, but the intake had no clearance at all. None of them. Plus, the steering stem bolt was loose. I tightened that up and got rid of the slight play in the steering.
I ran the quad today in the yard (in very small circles in a very small yard), and thought the vibration was slightly lessened by all the adjustments. It seemed better at idle, too. At high revs in neutral, it still vibrates more than any other quad I've ever owned, but then again, full throttle on a Raptor is unlike any other quad! There's a lot of power there, no doubt.

Mine vibrates a bit to, I got rid of much of it by tightening skid plate better and making sure your nerf bars mount flush up against the motor...my original white bros set-up had nearly 1/2 inch gap allowing a lot of vibration to pass through the rest of the bike...my new pro design pegs vibrate where they slip over the steel sleeves(I plan on running a through bolt to tighten that up.

I've got AC pro pegs and would be willing to take them off just too see if the vibration lessens. Less vibration means less riding fatigue! I didn't intall them, they came with the quad so they definately need a once over.
