Purchased new Kodiak 400 4 wheel drive auto. Dealer informs me valve adjustment very important after 3-4 tanks of fuel??? I need valve setting specs. Also can I purchase a shop repair manual from Yamaha? Is my dealer just trying to sell me 1st. checkup service?

get the manuel from the dealer, like 65 bucks out here in NJ. first check up very important but you can do it your self if you know how. basically the first check up validates your warranty so you might wanna have them do it. atleast thats what my dealer told me. it cost me for my 2000 grizzly 250 bucks in NJ.. my buddy has the same quad in pennsy and paid 80 bucks .. go figure......

Hi,
My Dealer says that the valves rarley need adjustment these days. Hmmmm? I am a Industrial Maintenance Tech of 18 years. I pressed the issue by saying, "You will check them right?". He said yes. Upon picking it up he said they were fine. I took her home and looked myself. They were just right. Getting to the Exhaust is a real &%#^*.
I suggest you check your dealers reputation and get some finger nail polish and mark the covers to see if they even look. I am still not sure they took a look. Wish I had marked them.
I paid $99.00 for first service here in GA. I purchased a manual from Yamaha for $45.00. I highly suggest getting one.

Took mine to dealer for first valve adjustment because I though I could hear them tap a little.
Don't think they touched them, still taps. Wish I would have marked them with nail polish (good sugestion).
First service, oil change, diff. gear oil, valve adjutment = 93$

I have a 1999 Grizzly with 1150 miles and have not yet had to adjust my valves. Don't get me wrong, we checked them after a few tanks of gas and they were within spec. I checked them again at around 900 miles and still were within spec. For a service manual I would call 1-800-860-0686. They have Yamaha Genuine parts at a much lower price than your dealer. I ordered a gasket and seal kit from them that my dealer wanted $120 for and got it for $63.
