hey, i got a DELL 2 months ago, its really good, cost just under £3000 and has a fantastic sound system with it. it came with 5 main speakers, 5 tweeters, and a sub woofer bigger than the machine itself which chucks out more bass than my hi-fi and car stereo put together!!! so choose dell, i havnt found a fault yet!

i am also looking into a new computer. mine is 2 years old now, and i guess its a dinosaur, lol. i am no brain when it comes to a puter, heck, it took me 3 hours to turn mine on, lmao. i went to a gateway store, and talked to a salesman there. told him what i want, making video's and all, and he explaiined power, and all that good stuff. he then printed me up a list of all the things on a puter he feels i would want for my future needs. total cost, with the flat screen 21 inch moniter was $2900.00 i then went home and built one on dells sight, with the exact same parts typed up on my gateway list. the cost to go with a dell would have been over 800 dollars more, for the same stuff crammed into it. i dont know much about puters, but i do understand 800 pritty good, lol. i will be getting a gateway.
good luck

Ok here is the deal.
I have about 10 years expierence in PC repair and service and have limited expierence in programming. I know teach Degree and Diploma seeking students in Microcomputer Repair, and Networking Specialist at a local Technical College. I have to say that Dell, and Gateway are so close that it is all up to the customer service you get. At a local University where I was in charge of the entire PC repair, upgrade, and service calls, there were no noticable differences between warranty repairs.
I recentlly bought a Dell and am very please. I also use to put together my own machines but enjoy the comfort of 1-3yr warrantys and actually the savings were not that great for a typical home computer. The only advantage out there now for Custom Built machines are for the avid gamers due to the ever increasing multimedia components.
Right now Dell has a $699 system with lots of goodies that would make any typical home user very happy for a while, excluding all those gamers out there. I think Gateway also has a comparable system.
I should also add the high end graphic guros out there also.

Another benefit to building your own is that you don't have that proprietary equipment.
3 years from now you "could" have to buy a power supply from Dell b/c a standard one doesn't fit and pay three times as much for it.
Upgrades can be a hassle too. Not to mention a bios that you usually can't tweak.
You said that you could do it, so just do some research before you buy. I just built this machine to replace my dell for less than $1400
AMD XP 2600+ processor
Gigabyte GA-7VAXP Motherboard with onboard Raid controller
Antec Case
ATI Radeon 9500Pro Video with 128MB DDR memory
512 Corsair DDR PC3200 Ram
2 120GB Western Digital Hard Drives setup as a striped drive with the raid controller = smoking!
Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse combo
Build that at Dell and compare.
I recommend Dell to novice users b/c of their support and we use them here at the school where I am employed as a computer support specialist, but if you are a fairly skilled user, build your own. You still have a warranty on the parts.

I may be wrong now but in 95-96 when I was employed by a compnay who custom built computers your memory, and processors only came with a 30-60day warranty and some motherboards. Now the harddrives, cd-roms, monitors, etc.. generally came with a 1-3yr warranty but you had to deal with those individual mfg's unlike with Dell or Gateway, one number for all your parts.
Here at the school that I am an Instuctor at we have Gateways and they are NOT proprietary. They use standard ATX power supplies, motherboards, and cases. They have standard AGP graphics cards and standard PCI NIC's and sound cards. These Gateways will take any standard equipment for an ATX machine. I have just repaired a out of warranty Gateway Pentium II machine with a standard ATX main board and was able to put the rest of the Gateway components back in.

I bought mine simply because my ex-employer had bought 1000's of them, over the years, and not had one problem with the service.
I had a fried modem 6 months after I bought mine. Dell fixed it that day.

Counter balancer moves in sync with the piston to theoreticly "cancel" out the weight displacement. It is safter to run a 250 engine with no counter balance in a bike because it is easier for the vibrations to escape, quad might shake itself to death, gl with it anyways hope it works
