Better Check rear brake pads on 2000 kodiac's
#11
IU have 100 hours on mine and they look good. I read the original post so I looked at the fronts too.
All is well.
When ordering EBC's save your cash and get the ones just below the sever duty units. They brake better and last only 5% less.
If you guys are trying to email me and it don't work it is beecause I can't get the moderator to fix my profile.
I went to a cable modem ISP and am now at

A buddy of mine is having the same problem with his stock Kodiak brake pads. We ride in areas with alot of mud, which seems to eat up the brakes. He called Rocky Mountain and they are on Back order for about 2 weeks... I guess alot of people needed new brakes.

My buddy has a 2000 Kodiak Ultramatic, and after 2 months, his rear brakes are shot. We ride in muddy conditions quite often, and the dealer informed him that Yamaha has 350 sets on backorder in our region. He's doing a slow burn!!!

Wll its me again and if you look at the original post date of my first posting and todays it has been quite some time. And STILL NO PADS. I called the yamaha customer service line and after about a week of trying I finally got through. (nothing but busy signal, I hope this doesn't mean everyone is having problems with yamaha). I was given the old "we don't know how the machine was used so we can't replace them under waranty". I said I will give you the benefit of the doubt and say this machine was riden hard (which it isn't), IT'S ONLY 2 MONTHS OLD THE PADS SHOULD NOT BE WORN OUT! basically I was told to go back and fight with my dealer about it. I was also given a supposidly new part number and told that there were some in stock somewhere in Wisconsin. I will contact my dealer tomorrow and try again for some results.
So Far I am NOT happy with the response from yamaha at all! I expect alot more for my $6000 investment.
P.S. I said I heard several others complaining about the same thing on the internet and was told "well you don't Know who is saying that stuff on the internet". My reply was "PEOPLE LIKE ME"

How hard is it to change the rear brakes? Is it like most car calipers? How hard are they to check? Now you guys are scaring me. I am still on the fence about buying a kodiak. I'd hate to buy one and have to change the brakes every other month...and have a leaky water pump to replace...and get wet slipping belts. But this atv looks so good other wise. I checked one out today at the dealer and It seems perfect for me.

If you ride in lots of mud, sand, water, I would check your pads every month. They are easy to check and replace. I've experimented with all brands of pads and they all seem to only last a month in the conditions we ride them in. It doesn't matter if you use the brakes or not, they are going to wear from all the grit constantly grinding away at the pads. Might as well use your brakes, they're not going to last unless you stay out of the mud, water, and sand.

Well I had that fight with my dealer and actually won. They replaced the pads. I was going on a big ride and needed them right away and told them I was tired of waiting so they pulled a set off a floor model and replaced mine. Yes I was impressed! Hey YamaHonda I get the impression that you are not really bothered by the pads only lasting a month or two? I am sure am I think my $6000 monthly payment is enough I surely don't want an additional $30 a month for the life of the machine.I also called the number above to get some hevy duty pads and they said it would be at least 3 weeks. Well good luck to everyone with the same problem hopefully Yamaha will produce a better pad or better system in the future.
