dude you answered your own question...it all depends on what you want to spend. wheel spacers are the cheapest way to go and should hold up for anything short of riding MX or freestyle. if you got the dough the axles the way to go.

I suggest an extended axle, especially if you ride aggressively and do a lot of jumping. Wheel spacers can and will eventually crack and/or break if abused, not to mention they put stress on the stock axle which is not the strongest either. The good thing about wheel spacers is that they are fairly inexpensive as compared to the price of a new axle.
I also have my front rims reversed until I get a set of extended a-arms, one thing to watch for is the tie rods will bend easier like this and it also softens up your front suspension.

I flipped mine and had to purchase a Durablue eliminator 2 + 2 axle.
Pros: Slide, instead of rolling or two wheeling, great handling.
Cons: Handlebars a lot more twitchy, very hard to hold - bam - had to purchase a Denton steering dampner, soaks em up now. Puts a lot more stress on your tie-rods especially with a dampner. I've pushed mine really hard and have not bent them yet may need after market tie-rods like the Albas.
Total width will be up to 49" hope you dont do much tight woods trail riding.
If I had had to do it again I defenitely would. She handles like a champ but it will cost you some green backs.
