Connecting rod failure
#1
For those that read in the other thread of my engine failure this weekend, It was not my 3 month old 02 tranny that locked up and gave way.
To catch others up.
Was riding at Dumont Dunes yesterday and went to take off, I don't remember if I shifted into 2nd or not but the engine locked up and I skidded to a halt. I originaly thought the engine died and because I was in gear it skidded to a halt. Instinct told me to look down at the motor and when I did I saw oil spilling out all over the dune. Somthing locked up and came through the bottom of my cases.
Took the skid plate off today and cleaned the area where it came through. Pulled the two broken pieces of my cases away to be able to see in better. I can see what looks like my connecting rod, without the small end connected sticking partly out of my cases at the bottom, right where the 2 halves come together.
I took the plastic cover off the crank end bolt to try and turn the crank with a socket, hoping I could break it free and see this part sticking out of my case move. No luck, the crank will not budge.
I was able to shift into neutral easily and get towed back to my truck. It appears the 02 tranny conversion was not the cause, which is good and bad in the sense that Alba is not at fault and I cannot expect them to fix it under any kind of warranty.
It would appear an entire engine break down is in order and a new carrilo rod installed. Hopefuly there wasn't any other internal damage but I fear that won't be the case. It'll be a while before there is any repairs done, money is scarce especialy the estimated $900-1400 in repairs if I do the work myself.
I honestly believe that Yamaha released the raptor so detuned because they knew the tranny would not hold up and with any higher compression the rods would eventualy give way.
I have another 01 Raptor that I can ride, 01?? Do I realy want to?? Me and the kids will just have to share for a while at least until it breaks also, and IT WILL.
Pistoned and Cammed raptor owners might want to re consider or do what others said you should do and install the stronger carrillo rod. JAT. (Just a thought)
Here is a picture of my hole.

Mr Olds,
If it is still apart I would consider the advice of Airraptor and others and have a carrillo rod installed. The rod is around $200 probably another 1-200 to have it installed on the crank unless you have the tools to do that part yourself. As it stands for me, when the time comes I'll probably have to take my new case and crank along with the new carrillo rod somewhere and have them install the rod into the crank and the crank into the case. That is if the crank itself is not damaged. I'm sure there is other things that got damaged when the broken rod swung around and smacked the case.

A $200 rod sounds expensive, but it is cheaper than your cases are going to be. My point is "a stitch in time saves nine" or something like that.

When I do my tranny I am going to do something to my rod. I may search for something a little less expensive than the Carrillo. Like you wsh money is very tight around here. I don't know if anything else out there but if there is I'll find it.
Can anybody give me some rod specs?

My $200 carrillo rod estimate was from a search for carrillo rods. The cases come as a set for $575 That doesn't include pressing in any bearings I can't reuse etc.
Lets see, $1600 tranny repair 3 months ago. + $1000-$1500 crank and case repair, if I'm lucky. (doing it myself this time)
