another banshee question

it smokes like crazy. it is running way too rich. i leaned my mix out....so i think i did any how. when i got it, it was already "modified"........being piped, jetted and some other goodies. but it seems like since i have had it it doesnt like to quit smoking. it has aftermarket carbs w/ 290 jets and a unifilter. had a twist on it b4 i got it so it has the idle screws drilled into the side. any ideas where those screws need to be and the air screw need to be. also how lean can i SAFELY go?

Maybe it has bad rings due to dirt or something inside the cylinder. Oil could be getting to top of the piston and causing lots of excess smoke. You could get it honed and buy new rings or just bore it over one more time, but boring is much more costly.. Does the smoke occur all the time, or just when it starts up? Mine smokes a bit when it starts, but after about 5-10 min, there is almost zero smoke..

You might want to take off the head and look at the cylinder walls. If you are careful, you can get the head off and back on w/o having to put a new gasket in. If the walls have some significant scratches, you may want to look into a new overbore. If they are smooth, then I dont know what to tell you. Its easy to check the scratches with a finger nail. Run it along the wall of the cylinder wall to check for big scratches. If you find a few, its likley thats your problem. Or maybe you have too much oil in the case. I believe it calls for a quart and a half, or 1500ml. Make sure to check your dipstick. Or just to be sure, drain the oil, and put 1.5 quarts back in.
