#1
My name is Ryan i am from oklahoma city and i am fairly new to the 4wheeler scene, from the sport bike scene. I bought a 03 raptor what are some fairly simple mods to get just a little horsepower here and there? I have heard a little about the airbox mod, what exactly is it and how do you do it??

An airbox mod can be as minor as cutting or drilling a few holes in the lid to removing the lid alltogether. There are even aftermarket air boxes that you can buy.
What you need to consider is what kind of environment you enjoy riding in. If it's really wet, you may not want to go nutz opening up or removing the lid. You can easily go to a K&N or UNI filter to help your engine breath easier. You will most likely need to re-jet which isn't a bad idea check it anyway.
Personally, I run a K&N with an OuterWear with no lid. I have had it in some mud, not any extreme mud and water. Mostly dunes riding, drag racing and some dry track riding.
As far as the "Bolt-On" area goes.............Filter / Jetting / Pipe........... in that order or all at the same time.

I wish I had some pictures but my mod worked out real well.
I took the lid off and cut the back end entirely off, but used a hacksaw and cut down the lenght a little to allow 4 clips to hold the front peice on kinda like a square horse shoe. I still use a stock filter (since all my buddies gave me theirs, I can keep them oiled and ready to go in a zip lock) and the lid holds it on. if its real wet I can still put the back end of the lid on with the last 2 clips on the airbox but it might run a little rich
I then jetted per an artical I read in dirtwheels to 165-160, (I think it was titled "3hp for $6")
I was really impressed, I had no "issues" on low end like some of my "dyno jetted" buddies who cut the flaps, I get really good mid and slight gain on top

Here is a little trick that I came up with that works great if you don't want to shell out the money for a billet filter adaptor. 14mins said I was just being cheap and had a nickel part protecting a $10K bike.
Take a look and you make the call.
If you have any questions, fire away.

Here is another example of a VERY MILD airbox mod. This was before I just yanked the lid. It is the last picture in my Jetting folder.
Have a look.
