Surely someone has had a similar problem, just an idea of where to start.

Yeah I've had that problem but I'm not sure what I did to fix it. So it only idles with the choke on... so that means you really aren't getting enough gas with the choke off to idle. I'd "open up" the idle circuit by turning the idle screw to the left, I think. Turn it until the quad starts idling on it's own, but don't turn it too far otherwise the screw will pop out. Make sure it's warmed up first, so go ride it around for 10 minutes or so before you mess with the idle. I think that's your problem, but if I'm wrong, someone correct me. sounds like you need to readjust the carb. its not getting enough fuel. My first guess would be the piolt screw. If i remember right, screw it all the way in and then back it out one and a quater turns and then do eighth turns till it idles right. dont forget to mark it when your full in so you know how many turns to you have made...

This is assuming that you havent made any drastic changes that you havent made us aware of.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the posts i will try this. The pilot screw is a flat screw on the bottom of the carb correct?

its a brass screw on the side if memory suits me. I think it is next to the choke or close to it. either way its brass and its small.

This could be # of different problems. A 99 is not that old so I would start with the spark plug and clean the air filter. Buy a new plug or rather 2 an extra is allways nice to have on hand. Check the new spark plug to see if it has the proper gap .024~.028 in. Then go to carb adjustments idle screw is a no brainer, the pilot screw is pre set, you shuold not have to adjust this. If you do adjust pilot scew note where it is set so you can return it to its original setting, if this is not the problem. It could be sucking air in around the head gaskit or carburetor boot! Start the bike use your choke to maintain level idle and spray starting fuid around these area's, if it accelerates you have a leak that cause's idle problems. Now what, OK lets remove the carburetor and then the bowl look for dirt and clean. Use carb cleaner spray through the jets. ? dose gas come out of over flow hose in storage. You may need to replace the float valve. a flooded carb could be your idle problem. Now we could go into timing and valve clearance but I dont think you will have to go this far before you find your problem. Good Luck

It has to be something with the adjustments in the carb. Are there any mods that you haven't told us about?

Clean out the carb and check the float height. The idle mixture screw is on the bottom of the carb around the middle.

edit* middle towards the front.
