How can I tell if the rod and/or crank is bent?

Damn you are right, it is in backwards. You can see the impressions of the exhaust valves on the pistons.

Doh....that REALLY blows. Good catch 007. Screw ups happen too the best of us. You may be able too use some sandpaper too smooth the piston so not too create hot spots during the combustion process if you are strapped for cash and feel lucky.

I guess I was too worried about getting the ring gaps in their respective spots and threw it in bass ackwards. Do you think the head is salvagable?

By the looks of the pic, I would use the head....just clean it up and make sure you have no cracks. Scuff the war marks with sandpaper so they don't draw heat and cause detonation....just like the piston (maybe 120 grid on the piston..lol). Of course, it's best too replace everything new.....but it's all about the available cash.

Yeah its prolly salvageable. Looks like the plug took most of the beating. but look for any gouges which will need filled (looks good in the pic). You prolly need a valve job in the least and a new piston.

The top of the piston should come up flush with the surface of the cylinder as I have seen. I would think the crank would be fine but rod is IFFY
