Picking out a helmet
Hey,
just got a '97 Warrior but before i do much riding i need to get a helmet. it'll mostly be trail riding so i want a full face helmet. the local yamaha dealer has helmets but they are $100 and up. problem is, i absolutely broke at the moment, so cheaper is better for me. but at the same time, it'd be pointless to spend any amount of money on something that's not going to work.
so what are some things i should look at when picking out a helmet? what weight would you consider heavy? what does snell approved mean?
how good are Bieffe helmets? there's one on the dennis kirk website for like $50. DOT approved, removable liner, 2lbs 15oz, etc. - any drawbacks to a helmet like this?
what are some other good websites that have good prices on helmets?
thanks,
bigmac

Bigmac- Any helmet is better than no helmet, ask ernie660 if he has any memory left. From what i have seen the more you spend the better they get. Try to find a close out or last years model if possible. My wife bought me a shoei (489.00) for about half that from motoxworld. If funds are real tight try to borrow a helmet for a few weeks until your finaces look better. I would think that you need to spend a little more than a 100 dollars to get a good helmet that is lighter. DOT and snell and ansi are just a few guidelines manufactures follow. Some pass them all and some do not, really just means that some manufactures pay to be certified by the others. Some standards are higher than others BUT ANY HEMet is better than none.

what ever you do, make sure its dot and SNELL certified, the Snell tests are much much harsher than the gov't ones. Also, they don't just test the first helmets off the line..but continue to test them randomly.

Picking out a helmet
I have a Bieffe, I paid about $115 for it I think. It has served it purpose and saved me on more than one occasion. BUT everytime I wear it I get a headache. So my advice would be to try it on before you buy it. I am not exactley sure why mine gives me a headache but my helmet doesn't fit great, its a touch big and that adds to some strain on my neck.
