I have an 89' Banshee, I was running it the other day to warm it up, and it just quit. I have tried and checked everything including swapping the CDI and the coil to my friends machine. His runs fine with both components. The stator checks out fine. When I kick it over it seems like it wants to start, but there is not enough spark to keep it going, as in it will only spark about every 4 revolutions or so. I work on these things all the time and am stumped. I currently have it tore down to the fram to put get it powder coated and put in an atv racing front suspension with works DR shocks with rez., just looking for a new angle to approach this problem. The CDI only has 40 hrs on it and the motor only has about 10 hrs on the top and bottom end. I replaced all the seals in the entire engine about 3 hrs ago. this motor is mint (it should be it cost me one. Like I said, I have checked everything. The only thing left to do is swap stators with my friends. Thanks
eric

Every component in the ignition system, including the stator, except the CDI, can be accuratly tested with a ohm meter. I don't have the specs in front of me but your dealer should provide them for you.

Well, it would be very tough for the ignition components to only fire every 4 revs or so. Take the magneto side cover off, turn key on and rotate the magneto trigger magnets past the pick-up while the plugs are out of the head and grounded. You should be able to see that both plugs fire every time a magnet passes through the pick up. A friend of mine just went through major parts swapping on his bike to get it running, so if you want to leave him a more detailed email he can help you i am sure. Let me know, and I will get you his address.

Intermittent spark could easily be caused by: an Intermittent short or break in one of the internal or external coils, a poor or loose ground somewhere like at the ignition coil, a defective main or kill switch, a rubbing wire in the harnes like the black/white kill wire (check especially around the steering head), a defective TORS switch (if equipt), a shorting wire from the stator, a defective plug cap, a defective CDI box. The possibilities are many.

Check your flywheel and make sure the key is not sheared, and the flywheel is torqued to specs.

you say you just powdercoated the frame a friend of mine had a similar problem after coating his frame ended out he had a ground problem.

other then that I would check for a sheared key like the post above mentioned

it might not be a banshee but my 250r had the same prob when I got it. it turned out to be corroison in the wire connection take apart all your wire connections clean them and fill the connectors with die electric grease. I hope this helps.
