Default K&N air filter for blaster?

Hey guys i just got my k&n air filter for my blaster installed and i was wondering if it would hurt my bike riding it with out the air box lid off. i do alot of riding in the dust and mud thats why i'm concerned. could i drill a couple of holes in the air box lid and put a very small screen to cover the holes, any suggestions
thanks,
