Race To The Sky
#1
Here’s something a little different. I just got back from a hill climb event down here in the South Island of New Zealand called RaceToTheSky.Com It’s a 14.5 km climb from 1500ft to over 5000ft with 135 corners on a gravel ski access road. Its billed as the sister event to Pikes Peak.
The great thing about this event was that out of the 100 Competitors over half were Quads or bikes.
The Super Quad field (over 750cc) consisted of some impressive equipment. There were 3 GSX1000 powered specials, a R1 in Rocket Ron’s old quad he took to Pikes Peak last year. A VTR SP1 custom which is the horniest looking and sounding quad bar none. A FJ1280 with Hilborn injection AND Quadzilla a GSX1300 turbo which can crank out in excess of 400 hp but is detuned to 300hp so the clutches last the race. One of the GSX1000 was in a Bomb frame and was only a few seconds off the fastest quad time of 08:52 seconds. Some Quads were running in excess of 200 km’s on the fastest stretch of road which is something to behold.
The Open Quad field (up to 750cc) had a good range of Banshee’s and Raptors plus a RG500 in a Banshee frame, a 330R and EX480 . I had the second fastest single four stroke which I ‘m chuffed with but I came undone with the tuning at high altitude. I run a CS 690/mikuni, normally with 180/187.5 mains with no air box & foam but ran 170/175 on race day but learned the quickest Raptor (686 with stage 1 cam) ran under 140 mains due to the altitude. There were 3 practice runs but due to a crash on the day before race day and the delay due to a police investigation, there wasn’t time on the practice day to rejet. There was a 727 Raptor there that was faster than the 686 that came second in Open Quad, but retired due to head gasket probs.
The under 425cc class had a range of 400ex, Z400, 250R and LT2 which also posting some quick times.
The whole event was won by Monster Tajima in a Suzuki Aerio P950 special with 900 plus hp with Rod Millen second in his Toyota and Steve Riley (an Aussie) in a twin engined Busa powered 4wd single seater, third. There were 3 Super quads in the top 10.
The weather was perfect and the event was a real blast.
I got a dozen good pics if anyone’s got a site to load them on.
Andrew.
