What is a good technique for wheelies?

I was playing tonight on my blaster in my field.

I was about to ride about 10, 15 feet or so. with the wheels about a foot and half of the ground.

To get the front end off the ground i stand up and yank on the bars from a start, and sit down on the back of the seat.

I just can't get it right. Either i end up on the ground, or i just get the wheels up about a foot.

What can i do to get them up higher and stay there?

I think some of my problem is that i can't totally nail it, my tires refuse to grab traction(they look like go-cart tires..major balloons) if i really get on it. I'm afraid to do them on a hard surface because i'm not that good yet.

1st Get tires with traction.
2nd to get a feeling for the quad put your left foot on the peg and your right knee on the seat with that foot on the grab bar. the reason I think you should start thisn way is to get the feel of the machines balance point by playing with throttle and clutch combos. You should be able to relize the balance point (also doing it this way you can jump off the bike if It goes to far back). Once you get good at this exercise your ready for the next step.
3rd Make sure on the previous step that your grab bar will stop the bike from a roll over (i.e. it won't flip back on you). Then just practice over and ove. Start in first gear and rotate between the clutch and the rear (foot) brake. If you go to far the worst thing you will do is go strait up to the grab bar. After that you start over and keep practicing. I've been wheeling for years and can do it for miles, all it takes is practise.
Good luck and ride safe with a helmet.

what if you hit a rock while your foot is in the grab bar? that could really! hurt.

in a past issue of dirtwheels it said how to do wheelis. you should sit backfar on the seat. put it in like 1st or 2nd gear, pull in the clutch and rev the engine around half or 3/4 of the way. while the engine is reving let of the clutch and hit the gas. when u get the front up, u need to find the balance point. if u could do all that u will be wheelin all day.

that is like the worst way to do it. that is a good way to be laying on your back. appertanly your not good at wheelies. on mine if i give it gas in first a little harder than nomral i can get it up good but it is a little hard to find the ballance point at first but then you get it then you figure out how to shift while wheeling after you do that you can go for quite aways while wheeling. good luck

ive gotr a trx 250x.i just put my foot on the grab bar at first, but as i got better i sat far back on the seat to get traction.on a four stroke you really dont gotta wait until you hit the power band.you dont have to rev it up too much.Ride into a wheelie.Dont let the clutch really fast or you'll stretch the chain eventually.let the clutch out slow, but fast enough to get it up to the balancing point

The art of wheelies with 2,3 or 4 wheelers requires one thing only, THE ABILITY TO USE THE THROTTLE AND REAR BRAKES PROPERLY!! Regardless of how far you are past the ballance point, as long as you have forward motion, appling the rear brake will bring the front end back down. Once you realalize this, all the tension dissapears and you can consentrate on what you are doing. Mastering the proper use of throttle and brake will allow you to wheelie anything as far as you want!

Not to change the thread, but what tires would give the best traction? I too was playing with the wheelie technique on my newly aquired Blaster yesterday, and had the same problem of too much wheel spin. The tires are some kind of balloon looking Cheng Shin, 20" I think. Do you Blaster guys go with a 20" with a more square shape? I will have to keep the stock wheels until I can afford more.

Tonight i was playing around again in the rain.

I found out that if i start out in second, they are easier to get up and keep up.

I tried using the foot on the grab and i just kept going too far back.

The neighbors were watching me tonight, Everytime i went over backwards they would bust out laughing. I was trying to make a show of it =)

U sound like me 94 dG blaster I am a bit of a show off at times. but I have got my wheelies on a 4 stroke down but U don't have a 4 stroke. when I had a blaster I would start in second like U said but when the front end started to fall I would quickly shift to 3 without using the clutch then gun it and carry on till U are top out in 6 I never did that on my blaster but I can top my 300ex out in 5 wide open. and the show thing I was showing off for my neighbor on my 300ex (she is extremely hot) any way I went down the road and came back on a wheelie in 5 top out but then I got her a little to steep and the grab bar caught and so i tapped the back brake it came down hard but I still bent the grab bar and she laughed at me it probably looked good to I had her crossed up doing about 50 on a wheelie it is rush that is for sure.
