Default Want Cam and Piston Upgrade???

What should I get??? I looking to upgrade the piston and cam, I want to know what should I stay away from and what should I look for. I want a high compresion 11.1 or 12.1, I know the 12.1 will require race gas, is it worth it? also 100mm stock bore or 101mm or 102mm wants the differences?

I also want to put in a cam in should I go stage 1 or stage 2 and what do I use Hot cams or Web cams or who?,

What's been your experiences and what would you recomend? I like to do things right the first time, so your input is very valuble to me.

I'd stay away from stock bore pistons, there seems to be some debate as to whether or not these are causing rod failures due to not having proper clearance with the cylinder walls. If you bore it you might as well go with the 102mm. I bought the JE and this seems to be the favorite piston even a twice the cost of the Wiseco. If you're not gonna port the head you might as well go with the stage 1 hotcam as you dont have to install new valve springs. I was told a couple years ago that with the web you have to have your rockers hard faced because the re welded webcams are harder than the rockers and will wear them quickly, equaling added $$$ With the hotcam you dont need a core either, a big plus. If you're not porting it you probably would be happy with the 10.75:1 and run 92-93 octane. I have the 12:1 JE with hotcams stage 2 and although the valvetrain seems alot louder the power increase was great. I run 50/50 Unocal 110 and 92 octane premium with no signs of detonation.

O.K. does going to 102mm piston require a new sleeve? What kind of porting is required? What can I expect the cost to be for porting and boring? and other than the machine shop work is the install something I can do myself?

My 102mm 10.75:1 is running fine on premium unleaded. I had the head cleaned up a bit and had Kibblewhite stainless valves and the Kibblewhite spring kit put in along with a Stage 2 HotCam. I had the Stage 1 and stock bore 10.75:1 before and it ran pretty strong. I guess it just depends on how much $$$$$ you want to spend!!! Good Luck with your decision!!!!!!!!!

XtremeRaptor, what was the difference in performance between the stage1 and stage 2 cam? was it worth the extra money for it? Also I see you have a 686cc is that the result of using a 102mm piston?

I just sent off a head to craycraft to have it ported and going 102mm 11:1 piston and stage 1 hotcam. I think they have the raptor head figured out better than most if not all the builders.

102mm does not require a sleeve and yes it is the 686. It cost me $50 to have this bored by LRD. Porting varies in pricing usually in the ballpark of $400.

When you get the hotcam stage 2 you have to get kibblewhite valve springs too. Just thought that might be nice to know.
