Default Which Sport Quad to Buy

I found a few threads similar to this but nothing with the recent 2016 models. Basically I'm having a difficult time choosing between the 2016 YFZ450R or the 2016 Raptor 700. My riding will probably be 60% trails 30% track and 10% dunes. I don't ever plan on racing but my buddy has a decent track built for his 400ex. I've read that the raptor is a lot more comfortable to ride so generally its better for long trails. But then I keep hearing about how much better the handling and suspension is on the 450r. So its made the decision pretty difficult. Is the 450r really so much more uncomfortable to ride vs the raptor? Is the raptor really as heavy and tippy as everyone says? I was sold on the raptor 700 but then after talking to a few buddies that all ride who said definitely the 450r for its handling alone. But they all like to race and mainly ride mx track. Just looking for someone who has good experience riding both. Thanks.

If you are truly looking at 30% track, go yfz. Both are great rides, and the upper models of raptor have very similar shocks. The Rappy does ride better, it is better for long trail rides in both suspension and power delivery. Air time is way in favor of the yfz though. You will be happy with either, and both work very well in the dunes.

I could not agree more. They are both fine machines. Like Scooter mentioned, if you really like to MX, the 450 will be the better choice. For all other types of riding I would definitely choose the 700. Make sure you ride them both before you decide.

I also agree. I have done heavy research on both and rode both a bit. I think both are great quads. The 450 is lighter, and more race oriented in my opinion than the 700. Likewise the 450 will require more maintenance than the 700 (more frequent expensive oil changes ect.). The 700 is heavier, and does not handle as well as the 450. That being said, it still handles great in my opinion and is by no means "bad". The 700 is also more comfortable. I find that after a long day of hard riding I am completely worn out riding the 450, where the 700 doesn't take as much effort.

This really comes down to your preference and which feels better for your riding styles. Riding each would be the best way to see. For the very few times I would want the edge in racing, or handling, I personally find that its not worth the extra maintenance and effort to ride, and my personal choice is the 700 between the two. But I don't think one is overall superior to the other, just different.
