Default 04 650 Backfired now will not run

Hey guys, Got another problem with my ATV. Before taking it apart I thought i would ask here. I have been riding this for 2 summers now, always maintaining it. I was out yesterday and while I was riding, near the end of the day, the quad backfired 2 times while accelerating in 2nd gear then stalled. It fired back up, ran fine idling but when i gave it gas, it backfired again, shut off and will now not start. When it stalled the 2nd time something sounded ruff on the inside but almost just sounded like the noise the one way starter clutch makes when it stalls, but cannot confirm, however when it stalled the 2nd time it sounded rougher then normal. When attempting to start, it sounds no different then it usually does. Sounds like kill switch is on, but is not. Guy i was riding with said it sounded like my rings went but wanted to ask here for any opinions before i go pulling my piston (with no experience). Thanks.

Check to make sure your carb didn't blow out of it's boot. Seen it happen many times.

thanks for that tip....but no had a look at it and put it back....i am no carb expert but it seemed in order....amazing though that the only thing that holds it in place is a rubber hose and some clamps

Several things flashed through my mind while reading op's post.
1) cam timing may have jumped. Check timing chain tensioner and cam timing
2) bad cdi/stator/pickup coil. Check for spark
3) one way bearing/spragg clutch. If the machine will start by roll start then the one way bearing is bad.

Also if you don't know, ds650.org is a place dedicated to the ds650

Just to be clear....my machine is a 05 650 traxter max xt.......and its a single cylinder. I have searched on youtube and across the net, and there does not seem to be alot of info on the single cylinder. Or maybe its my search methods. That being said, yes I would love any info you could give, yes!!! I would love a link to what you have. I have changed lots of parts over the years.....mostly CV joints, a-arms, belts....throttle....did i spell that right...lol...anyhow, thanks in advance

WOW!!!! ITS CHRISTMAS!!!! What a wealth of knowledge.....some differences to mine.....but so much there I can use. I look forward to going over my bike and give it some well deserved servicing....and now that I see how much detail that is in these manuals.....I should get the one that is specific to my 05 650 traxter max xt........THANK YOU!!!!
