Default 90cc w/reverse

I replaced a bad 90cc 4 speed with a 90cc 3 speed w/reverse and the new engine will not go in reverse with out pulling up on a treaded shaft coming out the top of the engine . Since my ATV is not set-up for this, what makes it work on others? Cable, linkage, etc.

Question

Anybody got a quad with reverse that could look and see how it is hooked-up? I'm sure its made this way so you can't down shift to reverse.

I wish i could help you...Looked at all my quads with a reverse... Nothing on top of the engines...

Could you some how get a nut on the threaded shaft to keep it engaged?

If i pull up on the shaft then it will go into reverse and the shaft stays up. When i shift to any other gear the shaft goes back down. I'm thinking its like this to kept you from down shifting into reverse while still going forward, would not be a good thing. I'm thinking maybe some quads had a cable to pull it up when you wanted to use reverse. The shift patten is 123NR up.
What keeps yours from going in reverse when going forward?
Thanks for the reply.

Well then bolting it up wont do you any good...Any idea what quad the engine came from?

My shift pattern is up for forward gears(3 on the 125, 4 on the 200 and 250) Reverse is down. It wont allow you to down shift into reverse if the quad is moving.

OK, heres what i did to make it work. Installed a lever that sticks out the side of engine that connects over the shaft with a lock nut. When i want to use reverse i push down on the lever, which raises the shaft and it goes in reverse. Works great.

Glad to hear you got it working.. Any chance you could post some pics of the modification? Could come in handy for the next person with that problem..
