I am thinking about getting a 250r and I am just wondering what would be the best year to look for.

the 86's are short rods, 87-89 are long

Default which year 250r?

I was planning on it, my trx needs a bit of work though. As of right now, my base gasket leaks, the valve core in my back right tire leaks air, I need a new exhaust manifold gasket and my exhaust needs to be remounted. I wanted to race ice this year real bad but with those things wrong I couldnt...so ill prolly race this fall when it starts again

LMAO ALL TRX's are orignaly red. You can buy any color plastic for them, but stock its red. 86 had a slightly diffrent frame. there was more to it and it was more sterdy. 87-89 had a bridged intake. All R's have a CDI limiter of 9300 RPM. But sence the R's electrical system is a resisitor type it will not get that far unless you buy an aftermarket cdi. (ie. LRD ultimate rev) 86-87 had a diffrent tranny and also diffrent sprokets. The top gears were slighly taller. But not noticable. The port maping was diffrent between each year. The 86-87's swing arm was steel and 2 inches longer. the a-arms also went forward a little more than 88-89. If you dont really know much about the R cylinder you wouldnt be able to notice the diffrent proting. Thats all the most MAJOR changes between years, but as for witch year is the best.... There all good IMO. There isnt really a hudge diffrence between them so I think you would be pleased with any year.

If you need more changes between the years Ill tell you them. But there real small (I.e jetting, spark plug, stuff about the sleeve ect.

All 250r's were not originally red. They all had red in them but that wasn't the primary color. In fact the very first one (86) was white and so was either the 88 or 89. 86 did have a more beefed up frame but is was more prone to cracking. The 86-87 swingarm was only 1" longer which is why you see so many -1" aftermarket swingarms available. The 88-89 were the ones with the a-arms forward. For 88-89 basically the whole center of gravity was moved back an inch. 88-89 is supposed to handle better because of the shorter swingarm and a-arms an inch forward so it is the choice for mx. You can easily achieve the same setup on an 86-87 with a -1" swingarm and +2+1 a-arms. I have an R for sale if you're interested. $4800
