I've seen it on alot of 2002 Ranchers, but not the Recon.
The problem with the 2002 Ranchers are that Honda changed the strength of the shift detent spring for 2002 making it easier to shift. By doing this, they essentially weakened the spring causing some of them to break.
Honda has been paying for these fixes. They have us order the spring for the 2001 model instead. This fixes the problem.
I can't say for sure that this is your problem, but worth mentioning to your dealer in case he is a small dealership who doesn't do alot of shop work compared to larger dealerships.
If your machine is under warranty like you say it is, there shouldn't be a problem and your dealer will know anyway when he removes the rear cover from the engine.
Let us know what they find in there.
