Default 1996 Polaris Xpress 400

Will someone tell me if these fourwheelers are any good? I just got one a day or two ago and I want to know if I should put any work into it. Runs great, but im pretty sure it would be a good idea to put a new chain & belt on it? Do these fourwheelers Last? Are they Reliable? Also, it is putting out 15 volts running. I am fairly "good" with ATV's, but I need to know some things. Will a new voltage regulator/rectifier fix this issue? Thank you to anyone who replies!! Sorry for all the questions.....

It's a 2 stroke, 2wd, 400 if that helps any.

Good machine and simpler since it's 2wd,but this is a complicated engine that can cost some$$ if engine repair work needed. Just the nature of two strokes versus four strokes. If battery is over charging, getting warm to the touch, then yes best to change the regulator in most cases.

Is there a way to tell if it's "on the way out"?

Regulator/rectifiers normally charge between 13-14.5 volts. Higher than that(I've seen them as high as 17-18 volts) can dry a battery out from over charging and cause battery plates to sulfate and short out. You can always have the battery load tested to see if it's ok after you change the rectifier.Rare occasions the charging coil of the stator can go haywire, but most of the time it's the regulator if it's over charging.

Just inspect the belt, blow out belt dust in an open area. Belt shouldn't have more than 1 1/2" slack when pushed down in the middle. Shouldn't be any glazed or burnt spots on the belt. If it needs replacing stick with the oem Polaris belt,3211077 as you'll have less trouble with it. Just a belt change only is easy.Just lift the belt up in the middle and walk it off the rear clutch, then remove it.Walk a new one back on.
If clutch guide buttons or ramp buttons need replacing this is the time to do it when the clutch cover is off. Manual shows you what tools are needed if you're a hands on person. DOWNLOAD 1996-1998 Polaris ATV Repair Manual ALL MODELS - Download ...

Another thing- this 4 wheeler is ABNORMALLY LOUD!!! You must wear hearing protection or it will give you a headache.... I know it is supposed to be loud, but this is just too much.... Do you know what could cause it? I think it is loose around the muffler/head of the motor.
