How does the gear change work if the engine is off....? Could the engine be idled way too high?

when running and just with Key off it shows lights changing gears. I removed the linkage and used pliers thinking maybe linkage but same issue. I opened the hub the linkage is attached to and put socket on bolt and changed gears same thing shows light changing but still in drive. even went as far as pulling the secondary thinking something in there but looks ok. So now I'm not sure what next step is

My old Big Bear would not go into reverse. Turned out the senor cable/wire to the foot brake came off.
Yamahas need a brake applied to get in gear. Worth a look.

I always forget about the foot brake. I'll have to use that next time I ride, probably will be easier than the hand lever when shifting. To me, the Yamahas with the shifter on the left side always seems a bit awkward. I wish they put it on the right like Kawasaki, Can-Am and Polaris. I still find myself using my right hand to shift even though it should be easier with the left.

Hook the linkage back up to the shifter.....leave the engine off......have someone "rock" the ATV back and forth and work the shifter and see if it will change gears.

Is there a fuse blown somewhere? A bit of a long shot I suppose but could get lucky. I actually had that happen on a truck I used to own. It wouldn't let it shift out of park because of a blown fuse.
