Virtual Reality & ATVs: Potential Life Saver
When we think virtual reality and the potential of the Oculus Rift, we usually immediately think video games. And while it’s true that loads of developers are writing software for 3D entertainment for this hardware, we happened upon a project going on at the University of Iowa where researchers have created a virtual reality ATV simulator.
With the aid of engineers from UI College of Engineering’s Center for Computer-Aided Design, this virtual reality simulator rig uses the virtual reality headset, a motion-sensing suit, and a moving platform to simulates changes in terrain and ATV handling characteristics.
The idea here is that new riders could potentially complete training and safety certifications without any real risk of crashing before mounting a real ATV for the first time. The possibilities don’t end there either- researchers are actually able to compare and contrast what separates an experienced ATV operator from a novice by studying reactions to the same type of crash-inducing scenarios.
Also interesting is that the rig will allow for deeper analysis of what causes rider ejection, rollovers, and situations where the ATV could potentially land upon the fallen rider. The goal of all this research serves to cut down on ATV-related injuries and fatalities.
This particular rig belongs to the University of Iowa of course but we have no trouble imaging the manufacturers themselves owning similar systems in the near future. Testing the very limits of an ATV’s capabilities without putting the operator in real risk is an invaluable tool; one made possible by today’s ever advancing technology.
