Air Filters Without the Mess:
One Company Says It’s Not A Dream

ATVConnection_oil_free_Airfree_AFE_2009Quick- what’s the worst part about servicing your quad’s air filter? The sticky filter oil? The grime? The fact that you taste oil every time you eat anything for a solid week? Advanced FLOW Engineering (aFe) knows where you’re coming from. A manufacturer of performance products in a wide variety of arenas, aFe has only recently set its sights on the ATV industry by releasing a series of their AE1 oil-free air filters for quad-specific use.

ATVConnection_proDryS_2009So just how does an oil-free air filter work? Synthetic fibers is the short answer- many layers of them to be exact. aFe calls their revolutionary tactic the Pro DRY S system, which translates to four-layers of varying thickness synthetic filtration material (fabric) nestled between two layers of aluminum wire mesh. Oil free not only means that the filter comes from the factory without oil, wax, or goo but it also means that solvents or cleaners aren’t needed for cleaning and it never requires oil either- ever.

aFe calls the filter self-cleaning and the concept makes sense. Since there is no sticky oil on the filter’s surface to trap and hold dirt, the dry filter simply sheds off whatever airborne material it may have gathered thanks to engine vibration and the action of your ATV as it encounters rocks, ruts, and roots. Of course, that dirt gets deposited within the air box so it’s advised to give the inside of the box a nice wipe-down with a damp cloth as often as possible.ATVConnection_oil_free_airFilter_AFE

To answer the most common questions before you even have a moment to think them: No, the filters do not require jetting adjustments, no even the filter seal is designed to function without grease, and yes they cost about the same as a standard foam aftermarket filter.

The goal with aFe’s products is to spend more time riding and less time wrenching. At present, the company’s ever-expanding line of AE1 Oil-Free Air Filters is limited to late-model sport quads from Can-Am, Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha and Suzuki. However, if the demand proves strong enough, expect that product line to continue to expand to include all of the performance ATV offerings from the major manufacturers. Additionally, aFe offers a full line of UTV products on their site.
