Ask The Editors: Cooling Fan Not Coming On
Not getting breezy.

Dear ATVC: I have a 2020 Tracker 300 radiator fan that ONLY works when hooked up to a 12v battery directly. When the ATV is running and getting to a hot temp, the ATV sends anywhere from 12v up to 14v to the fan and the fan should turn on in that volt range, but it doesn’t. I have tested every wire with a voltmeter from the bike going directly to the fan wire and I am getting volts varying from 12v to 14v.
I bypassed the wire connecting the fan to the ATV also (hardwired around the connection) just be sure it was not a bad connection. Yet, still the fan will not come on. For some reason the fan does not like 12 volts from the quad but it does like 12 volts from any battery I test it with. Any ideas?

We had a similar situation happen once with an older Polaris Sportsman 550 and it turned out to be trouble with the temperature sensor, which acts as a secondary control switch for the vehicle’s fan.

We don’t have experience with the Tracker 300 but, in perusing their wonderfully thorough maintenance manual, it looks like there is indeed a sensor monitoring the engine’s oil temperature that allows the circuit to complete at 187-194° F.

They go through the trouble of providing the step by step of how to diagnose this sensor on page 78 of the service manual, which can be accessed in its entirety by clicking here. Given the range of testing you have already performed, you should have no trouble with this diagnostic procedure, and, since you already ruled out a malfunctioning fan, we’re pretty sure this is what’s giving you problems.
