Words That Have Different Meaning to ATV Enthusiasts

When we were in grade school and even before that, we learned the definition of countless terms and phrases.

For most of the general public, that’s where the story ends. Pick up any dictionary and it’ll match up pretty nicely with what you’ve already learned.

This isn’t the case for the ATV rider. We have our own set of terms and definitions unique only to fellow enthusiasts.

Let’s take a look at some of our unique vocabulary, define it and compare it to what the same term means to the rest of society.

Whoops

Regular Dictionary: (interjection) used to express surprise, mild embarrassment, etc., or as a casual apology.

ATV Dictionary: (noun) series of rounded mounds of dirt staggered equidistant apart. Usually found on a motocross style course.

Used in a sentence: The whoops were huge out there this week!

Dialed

Regular Dictionary: (verb) (used with object) to regulate, select, or tune in by means of a plate or disk with markings or figures for indicating or registering some unit of measurement.

ATV Dictionary: (adjective) to describe either man or machine operating in an optimal state of performance.

Used in a sentence: He’s got that Raptor absolutely dialed through the whoops.

Tabletop

Regular Dictionary: (noun) a surface forming or suggesting the top of a 4-legged piece of furniture usually used to serve food and gather around for meals.

ATV Dictionary: (noun) a type of jump that connects the launch and landing mounds.

Used in a sentence: Coming up short on a tabletop hurts a whole lot less than coming up short on a double!

Cased

Regular Dictionary: (verb) (used with object) to enclose something within a container

ATV Dictionary: (verb) to come up short on a jump in such a way that the machine makes contact first with the frame rails and bottom of the engine.

Used in a sentence: I wouldn’t be sporting this pretty ankle cast had I not cased that triple.

Pinned

Regular Dictionary: (verb) (used with object) to fasten or attach with a small, slender, often pointed piece of metal.

ATV Dictionary: (verb) to ride hard at high speed.

Used in a sentence: I totally pinned it through the technical section. Too bad nobody was there to see it.

Yard Sale

Regular Dictionary: (noun) a barter style gathering centered on used or unwanted household goods or personal items, typically held in one’s garage or yard.

ATV Dictionary: (noun) a type of crash where the rider and machine deposit pieces and accessories in a long trail as a result of tumbling.

Whip

Regular Dictionary: (noun) a strip of leather or length of cord fastened to a handle, used for flogging or beating a person or for urging on an animal.

ATV Dictionary: (noun or verb) the process of intentionally knocking an in-flight ATV sideways as a display of aerial control.
