Let's start with the simpler stuff, then if necessary dig in deeper.
There is a safety interlock on almost all quads that require you to have the brake applied before the starter will engage. The reason for this is the same as the interlock on your automatic transmission car that keeps you from starting it up in gear and lurching into something.
To test this interlock: Turn on the ignition and apply the brakes. Look at the brake light. Is it lit up? If you can manage to fiddle with the brake lever(s) and get the brake to light up press the start button while the brake light is lit. Can you get the brake light to light? If so, can you get the starter to crank while the brake light is lit up?
There are other causes of this as well, but brake switch problems are overwhelmingly the most common.
The remote start bypasses the brake safety interlock (why they would design it that way is beyond my comprehension, but is the way it is...).
To dig deeper you will need a volt meter so we can trace the power from the battery to the starter solenoid and find out where it stops.
