The shift lever pulls on a cable that moves a lever back and forth that goes into your Forward/Neutral/Reverse [FNR] gearbox. This lever action is adjustable, and this adjustment is touchy and critical (at least it is on my 2008 Hensim 150cc quad).

The first thing I would do is look for loose or slipping mechanical connections in the FNR lever/cable chain. Fix that if necessary, then look at adjustment.

On my Hensim quad I ran into trouble when climbing hills in Forward (drive). Under load the FNR gearbox would pop out of gear completely, then re-engage shortly after (with a little grinding in the process). I also noticed a sort of galloping effect when the load wasn't enough to pop it out of gear. It almost seemed like the CVT transmission was gearing down and then back up under medium load.

I fixed it by adjusting the range of the lever arm on the transmission to be be *more* into the Forward position when the Drive selector was in Forward, and *less* into the Reverse position when the Drive selector was in reverse. That was three years ago - It's been fine ever since.
