Default 125 bogging badly

I got my son a 125 china quad, I am not sure of the brand, I think it may be taotao.

My problem us when you mash the throttle it boggs so badly that sometimes it will die.

If you ease into it slow enough you can get it to run full throttle and it seems pretty fast, but it is just terrible off the line.

I only see 2 screws on the carb. The bottom seems to just let the fuel drain out of the carb, and the top one that seems to adjust the idle.

I have played with it, and it feels like it runs best with a high idle, but I cant get the bog problem to go away.

Does this sound like a possible clogged jet or other carb problem?
This cant be how these things are supposed to run?

thanks for any help.

Welcome to the forum High Boost!

Your never going to be able to snap the throttle open, and get instant response from a air cooled 4 stroke.

did you buy this used? if yes i would clean the carb.. some of the 1newer 125's came with a brass plug over the fuel screw.. if you've got a brass plug on the carb.. pull it off and open the screw 1/2 to 1 turn and see if it runs better..

its brand new.. I pulled the carb last night, I havent opened it yet, but it looks like this:

I dont see a brass plug (unless you mean the one right by where the air filter goes, and I dont know how you could turn that)..
I read somewhere that they ship with some sort of gel in the carb, and I was thinking that may have clogged a jet, thats why I pulled it

and dont get me wrong, I dont need instant 2 stroke response, I want my son to be able to give it gas without worrying about it stalling..

ug, this stupid carb is not serviceable?
the bowl is pinned on with brass pins, instead of screws, so I cant open it
I am afraid if I punch them out I wont be able to get this thing back together.. I guess I could find some screws to hold it together..

is this normal? should I just buy a better carb?

You need to remove that brass plug and get to the fuel screw under it.... maybe slowly drill it out?

Does it look like brass plugs are covering the bowl screws? or they are like rivets?

alright, I will give it a shot, thanks for the help

an unrelated question, this thing doesnt have a petcock to shut the fuel off, so when I pulled the carb I had to stuff a screw in the fuel line.. should I ad one, or is it not important on a 4 stroke like it is on a 2 stroke?

I assumed they were like roll pins, except they are solid..
they look like the other brass plug, just a smooth shiny piece of brass
