Noisey Engines?
#1
Hello everyone. Has anyone noticed that these Chinese engines seem to be a liitle more noisey than their Japan counterparts? I just got dont going through a Wilderness 250cc from front to rear, the absolute worst things is for these atv's to sit for a long time. I was just curious as to everyone elses thoughts on the engines.

Welcome to the forum Wilderness 250!
I am surprised mine all still run..and run well... mine arent noisy.. but my 125 and 150's do vibrate a bit..especially my 125..
Did you buy the Wilderness 250 used?

I bought it used and sitting a long while. I now have it running excellent except there is valve train ticking that doesnt sound normal to me. I set the valves at 4mm perhaps they need to be a tad bit tighter. This one has me stumped because i cannot see anything that is out of the ordinary.

I'm assuming you meant the valve clearance was set to 0.004 inches and not 4mm. 4mm is about 3/16 of an inch
.
I don't know about 250cc engines. 0.004 inches (exhaust and intake) on my 150cc GY6 engine works fine.

I guess the big question is that if the valves get to be too tight will they also tick? I guess its possible because they are working way to hard, after researching a bitI think that setting them at 4mm is indeed to tight, geez I wonder what I was thinking. Back to the drawing board I guess.

Where are you checking the valves and getting 4mm of clearance?
4mm is .1575 .... 40 X as big as .004
If you have them set at this.. which i doubt..it wouldnt run.. if it did it would be very noisy.. but the valves would be very loose, not tight..

You are correct it is .004 not 4mm. I should have made that more clear. I am wondering if they are still to tight. I thought I read on here somewhere that .004 was the setting but it may not have been for the 250's.

If they were tight you would have trouble starting it..
Are you sure you are at the correct TDC when you check/set the valves? there are 2 TDC's on a 4 stroke.. you want the one after the intake valve closes.

I agree. I will double check the settings but it starts right up and runs very good. Its just noisy in the valve area like one is loose, but based on what I am reading its not possible. I set them to .004 but the service manual I found calls for .005 intake and .009 exhaust. So I am clearly tighter than what it calls for yet the noise it makes sounds like its loose
. Thats why I was asking if a tight valve also makes a ticking noise similar to a loose one but not as loud.
