2012 Gio 110cc Hummer II Not starting!
#1
Hi, Just bought this ATV online from Parnus (BC, Canada). And had a slight setback at first getting it started. Need to find the "sweet spot" in the chock setting. Got that figured out and it ran well for about 2 days. Then:
1. When riding it it would just die. Like it ran out of gas. It would turn over some and at first start ok then go a few feet and die again. Then nothing. It was as if the battery was dead and it would not turn over. So recharged the battery and it will turn over for about a minute. Then noting and the battery dies again. When it is running at few seconds there is a "rat-at-tat tat" sound coming from the engine (not sure from where)
So far I have:
- charged the battery
- Change the plug from the piece of ***************** to new NGK
- check the wiring some (not good at all using a multimeter)
- took the cover off and look at the Stator. No visible signs that it is burnt out, but not sure. There was a wierd burning small the first couple of time we where on the ATV that I could not see where it was coming from so might have be that.
I don't really know how to test the Stator, Starter, rectifier or CDI. I don't even see where the CDI is on the ATV????
Also there was a "cracking" sound coming from the motor after about the 3 time it was ridin. I read that this can happen and just tight the head cover (4 bolts) and that would fix it. I read that it is comin for the bolts to be loose at first and the compression escape causing the noice. but once the engin heats up the noise disappears and that was was going on with our. I tighten up the bolts, but have not had the ATV running long enough to see if that fixed it.
If some one can tell me what else to look for that would be great. I have an 8 year boy who is going nuts waiting to ride it lol...
Any advice would be much appreciated. Sorry for long post.

The burning smell is normal all my equipment had that for the first few runs, paint etc getting warm.. Clutch or cvt burning in. The pinging noises are pretty much understandable, aluminum and dissimilar metals expanding and contracting from heating and cooling. Most if not all engines do this to some extent. The cheap exhaust shields do enough of their own lol
First off when buying the Gio products there are several things that you need to do right off for dpendability and performance.
Check every electrical connection.
Check every nut and bolt and use loctite on them all.
Change the oil before you even run it. Some 15w-40 diesel oil will work. Don't use a synthetic or oil with antifriction additives as some of these units use a wet clutch system.
Remove and flush out the fuel tank. There is usually some form of crud in these things from the manufacture process.
Replace the spark plug - which you did.
Check the spark plug boot and the connection to the coil. The plug wire connection to the boot and coil are just screw in and sometimes do not make a good connection. The wire is usually long enough that you can ensure the contact by removing the wire (unscrew it), cutting 1/4 inch off it and re installing it in the boot and the coil sides. I usually replace the wire and boot with an NGK racing cable set. You can pick them up at various places Lordco being one of them. They are also cheaper there than Ebay.

Replace the fuel lines and filter with good quality lines and filter. I use a fram g1000 filters. The stock lines are junk and will break down causing rubber bits to enter your carb.

Sometimes the float bowls are packed with gel sometimes they are not. I suspect your carb has dirt in it now if the above fuel delivery items were not done. Take the carb off and clean it out completely. Remove the jets and clean out all passge ways. Check to see that your float needle and seat are clean. When re installing the carb make sure the o rings on the gasket (black plastic spacer) and on the back of the carb are good and not giving you air leaks. There is also a mod I do to the float bowls to increase the amount of fuel flow that the carb will let in. Depends on your skill level if your interested let me know I can explain it.
Your issue is more than likely fuel delivery and not electronic. To test for spark pull the plug and leave it connected to the boot, touch the base of the plug to the engine body and turn the engine over. If you see spark then your good to go.
The batteries in these things are not all that great. I always add an extra set of wires with a plug so I can hook up a maintenance charger to them when not in use. The charging systems will not always keep up to the demands esp. when you are using the lights and other accesories.
There is also a tether switch on these things that is problematic. The switch is intended to stop the vehicle in the event of a fall off. I have had several of them fail. Follow the wires from the switch to the connector and disconnect it. It may be that it is killing the engine, if it runs disconnected then that is your problem.
There will also be a brake switch. It is required to have the brake on to start the unit. If you are already aware of that just check the connections to ensure they are sound.
Did your unit come with the remote kill / security system?
If so I would recomend pulling from the system. You may be getting issues from it. There should be a large white plug connected to it, you must disconnect it from there and add a jumper wire from the pink to the black/white striped wire right below it looking at the plug with the clip up.
With a 110cc and an 8 year old I would also recomend making sure you have the screw in the thumb throttle set right to limit throttle throw. I have a little Gio 110cc mini atv similar to the new Gio Spider and I have managed to wring alot more power out of it than an average 8 year old should have available to them LOL.
There is a reason these units are so cheap in comparison to the name brands. They are not always built with the same quality components and there is definatly alot of short cuts in quality control of the manufacturing process. That being said if you are reasonably mechanically inclined they are well worth buying over someone elses used name brands and inheriting their issues for the most part. parts are relatively cheap for them, I would recomend ebay over Parnus and its sub companies (Gio Canada / Sven99neo from ebay / Pocketbike Canada to name but 3) the prices can be 3 to 4 times cheaper.
Well hope this helps and let me know what you figured it was.

Wow. Soolaj's post was really excellent advice for a new chinese quad. Very well written
.
As Soolaj suggested, check for spark first. It sounds like fuel issues to me too. But I also wonder why your battery is going dead, so there may be some battery charge system issues too. To test this start up the quad and run it medium fast speed with the headlights off. Use a meter to measure the battery voltage reight on the battery terminals with the engine running medium fast. You should see 13.5 to 14.5 volts DC.

I had the same battery issue with my first Gio ATV. They are not all that good and with just a few minutes worth of cranking they quickly loose their juice.
For the sake of just getting the unit running I would remove the gio battery and use a car battery in its place. Like I stated earlier I add a conector to the gio battery for the addition of the maintenance charger, this also allows me to connect a car battery to it without any hassle. I usually throw a spare car battery in the truck when we go anywhere in case we lose power to one of the batteries. With all 4 vehicles wired with the same plug I can also jump any vehicle from another if the need arises out in the bush with a cable I made for this purpose.
Keep in mind these starters were never meant to be sat on and 5 to 10 seconds of cranking before a rest is about as much as I would do. Last thing you want to do is replace a burned out starter motor already.

Wow! you folks know your stuff. You seem to be bang on! It was dirt in the fuel. I did not have a new filter (will pick one up to have in stock), but I drained the tank and flushed out the filter in gas and some low presure air etc.. Then put in new fuel. (also changed the oil at the same time, I used the recommend oil that can be used for wet and non wet) Will change again once I get the engine good and warmed up.
And that did it.
It took a couple of starts (needed to find the "sweet spot" on the choke) But she turned over and took it out for about 1/2 hour last night. Stop and started it a few times not a problem with the restarts. I was not comfortable with cleaning out the carb, needle, jet etc... yet. Need to research more on how to do it properly. Damn hard to get at too.
Before work this morning went out to see if it would start without me having had charged the battery last night and after 4 starts she cranked over and ran great. THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!
I am still going to look at the wiring and changing out the spark plug wire and can get a better CDI for about $25.00 Cdn not sure if it is worth it, but I sometimes I take it out for a spin (210lbs) and need to go up some hills, I read that they can help with HP??? What are your thoughts.
I am in the process of checking all the bolts I can and giving it a real good going over.
Not sure, but I think Gio is sending me out a new Stator and some other items covered under warrantee, if so then I should have so important parts on hand if need be.
You mention to make sure that the throttle is screwed back for kids. Have done that and also have the helmet, and put a flag on the back so we can see them better off in the distance when he is out in the back fields. I am teaching him how to just feather the throttle when going down grades, even with the throttle screw the ATV can pick up quite a bite of speed on the down slopes. but need to keep it so that he can get make it up the slopes too. Not sure if there is anything I can do to the engine or thottle, just need to stress :Safety First and educate on how to ride safe!
Thanks again
