Default Please help me find a home for this green wire.

I have a BMX Freedom ATX, small 50 or 70cc. Friend says it looks like a 70cc honda copy. It ran when I bought it, but needed tires fixed and a new battery. I have the new battery and placed it in the battery box. It has the obvious red and black wires, but also a green wire with no grommet, just bare wires. If touched to positive on the battery- sparks. Voltmeter shows very low ohms, must be a ground but to where? Wire comes out of a harness and can just reach the back of the battery box. Part of a safety fearture?
Help

When you say low ohms on the green wire to ground, how many ohms?

Green is a common wire color fro ground. Is the black wire a big fat wire by comparison? Does it go from the negative battery post to a screw lug on the engine near the starter motor?

Can you find a small gauge red wire coming off the positive battery post, or maybe off the starter solenoid? Can you find a fuse within a few inches of these places?

The stated "it must be a ground, but to where?" I'm not sure what you're asking. If it must be a ground it goes to ground... But the negative battery terminal is also ground. Maybe that's what you're asking...

New batteries being installed in a non working quad are a recipe for disappointment unless you have a maintenance charger keeping that battery charged up. If you allow that new battery to get discharged even a little and then leave it that way the brand new battery will be quickly ruined. You *must* keep that battery charged up, and you must do that with a maintenance charger. Don't use automobile battery chargers unlesss you can throttle them back for a small quad battery. 2 amps maximum charging rate with trickle charge afterwards once the battery is charged.

Default Green wire

Thanks Lynn. I do have a fuse on the red wire. Green wire had 3-4 ohms. I tried it on the ground of the battery- no luck. Tried it on the frame, no luck. Got frustrated and took it to a local mechanic who does China ATV's. I do appreciate the mention of the trickle charger. I'll get one. My charger will do 2 amp slow charge, but I'll add to my inventory the trickle charger.

I've been so busy lately at work that I'm not doing so well when answering questions here on this forum lately. I read my post from last night and realized that I'm giving advice when I don't even know what the problem is . What was I thinking?

So what is the problem exactly? You have a bare green wire near the battery box that goes somewhere. And something doesn't work when it is disconnected, tied to +12 volts, or ground. And what is that thing that doesn't work?

Starter doesn't crank?

No spark?

No headlights?

Uneven tire wear?

I can't believe I didn't ask this before.

Let's hope your chinese atv mechanic is better than me on this. But don't be afraid to come back if it doesn't work out. I'll try harder.

Hi Lynn,
The engine turns over but will not start. It is currently at the pro after I lost patients. I tried connecting the green wire to the frame... still will not run, (previously tried it to the battery ground... notta, and when touched to the positive battery post it sparked). I pulled the plug wire looking for fire...none. Not knowing whether that green wire was stopping the spark (like a safety cut-off feature), I gave up and delivered it to a guy that knows China ATV's. If anyone is interested, I'll post the answer to the mystery green wire upon it's return.
