12v to CDI, no spark, Leipai?
#1
Good morning everyone.Im fairly new to the forum, this is my first post but I have been around for a while.
I bought a 50cc quad for my son from my brother in law. The brand is unknown, the key says Leipai, Im not sure if thats the name of the manufacturer or just a generic key. With that said it has been difficult to search for the answer I require. Quad is cranking, but I am not getting spark out of the coil. Logic would tell me the coil is bad, however the coil isnt getting voltage, I checked for voltage at the CDI, I am getting voltage to the CDI but nothing out.
I have 2 connectors on the CDI wires, 1 connect has 3 wires, Red, 12V hot. Grey and black both show to be going to ground, .3 OHMS to battery ground. Then I have a 2 pin connector, both white and both leading off to something that used to be there but is no longer. I don't know what was there, but when I brought the quad home it had a red circle module on the back of the CDI, which I believe to be the security system.
Basically my question is, am I supposed to have 2 ground wires coming off the CDI? How am I supposed to bypass this "security system" If thats what it really is? Is Leipai the name of the manufacturer or a generic name?
I apologize in advance for any ignorance, or if this has been covered 100's of times. I have a picture of my CDI, just cant get it to load yet.

A lot of times they come with remote kill switches. One thing you in lucky about is atv parts are pretty cheap on these quads. Where name brand CDI can run to close to 300 bucks. Best way to test your idea is find out which engine you have. Gy6 or CG motor. You can tell by the CDI. Go on ebay and search up 50cc performance cdi. You will see a cheap blue one match your plug and order it. Run you about 20 bucks. Just to test if it is cdi. Stator go first then the coils then the cdi.
These quads need a lot of maintance BUT if you do it right when you start to repair them. You won't have prob. A lot are box atv shipped to your door put together but the shocks and handle bar and tires. I have redone a lot on my Tao now I haven't seen any probs good lucky

I wasnt sure about buying another CDI seeing as how the security system was missing and I thought that might be causing an issue with the CDI not putting voltage out. However a shorted CDI would explain the grey wire having ground. I just hate throwing money at it not knowing what the problem is. May just be what I have to do. Fortunately like you said theyre cheap. The parts for my TRX450r are ridiculously expensive. Thanks again.

I found a tag that said Manufactured by Unique Industries & Trading co. Which I think is a Roketa atv. Anyone know if thats the case? Im having a hard time finding a CDI for mine, It has 6 total wires. 3 wires go to the connector Red, Grey, Black one wire is the antenna, and 2 white ones are on a seperate connector, so I really only need a 5 wire CDI wit 2 connectors.

I took it to my local chinese quad dealer and he said 9 outta 10 times its the CDI, so I went a head and ordered one. Im gonna go that route right now. What I was referring to as the CDI wasnt the CDI at all. Thats why I couldnt find a CDI like mine, cuz I was looking at the wrong thing.

Most of the time there behide the lights. Are under set. There really cheap I have a couple performace ones to remove the rev limit. My local dealer for kawasaki wants 200 for the cdi. Am going to go ahead and buy one think stator and cdi and coil went out when I took it 3ft under water lol goodluck!
