Z-400 just quits

Friends wife's bike. Doesn't have 20 hours on it but it is out of warranty. She can ride 20-30 minutes and it backfires and dies. Has to sit 15 minutes and it will run another 20 minutes or so untill it dies again.
So far we have drained the tank and carb several times and filled with fresh gas. Replaced the plug with a new one twice, Cleaned the air filter too.
Plug looks a little rich but not fouled.
Dealer told us to check the gas cap vent hose.....it's fine.
When it dies it has spark, draining the carb shows that the carb has fuel.
Any ideas? thx

Run it on reserve , see if it still does it . Mine will back fire and die at about a 1/4 tank . When it dies turn to prime position to get it back started and run it on reserve . If the tank is full and its doing this I would yell at the dealer .

I just got mine 6 months ago and it was doing that a couple of times, the first time I had to put it on reserve and have noticed that when the tank is about 3 inches from the fill tube low it has to go on reserve then the second time it wouldnt start at all and found out the vent tube was kinked. All in all the bike is great!

I'm in good with my local dealer and he also told me to look at the vent tube under the plastic key cover on the bars.
I'll see if I can get out there this weekend and check that out for her.

mines the green version but it does the same thing. I was pretty torqued at first (its less than a week old) but figured out to throw it into the reserve and the prob goes away. First year production blues I guess.

If the fuel vent hose in the gas cap is kinked when you ride it for so long the sucking the fuel out makes the tank try to suck air through the carb there for shutting off the fuel.
I had an old TRX250 that had a bad switch that turned the tank vent on and off..got stuck in the off position and someone broke of the handle.
Check the gas tank vent for sure!

My z done this exact same thing memorial day and it scared the crap out of me. We went up a trail to a little back woods highway to get a pop and something to eat at this little grocery store and my buddies all on honda 450 foremans were trying to squeeze me out so I couldn't get by them anyways I laid down on the gas and split between two of them and my brother was way out in front leading. I blew by him and he said he was doing about 52 his maximum speed and when I got about 10 quad lengths ahead I heard a backfire and I had no more power. We wheeled in a driveway and everyone was like what happened. I was dumbfounded and p.o.ed. Anyways my brother saw my hose was twisted on my gas tank and he didn't see why that made my z just quit but anyways we pull started it and it ran fine the rest of the day after we fixed the hose. I don't know about you guys but the hose on mine seems way to long and that makes it kink up.
