400 or 500 sportsmans?

if you buy the 400, chances are, you'll wish that you would have bought the 500 in no time!

Not so in many cases. I have a 04 sportsman 400 and a 2001 500HO..
Yes the 500 will out run the 400 but what are you looking for? If it's speed don't buy a sportsman, yes they run up to 55-60 but he not in record time!
I'm quite impressed with the 400- I bought it before May 31st and Polaris was running a promo and the EBS was included if the customer wanted it.
The 400 Sp will do everything the 500 will do except for top end. Save the $500-$600 difference and buy some ACC for your ATV..IMHO
Just depends on what your looking for. and of course the 600 SP is only $500.00 more than the 500HO
The 700 is $500.00 more then the 600........All depends what YOU and your needs are.!!

SageCrusher is correct, you need to go and ride them both and then pick the one that bests fits your needs. I will add that I rode both the 400 and the 500 HO when I was looking and I ended up purchasing the 500 HO hands down. Great riding machine and more than enough power. As far as which one is the better deal, of course the 400 will be less money, and in most cases is more than enough machine, however, you will just need to decide if the 500 HO is worth the extra few hundered that it's gonna cost you. I know I felt it was. Again, it all depends on what your wants and needs are and how much money you're willing to spend. I believe you can't go wrong with either one.
