Default What causes this..

I have a 2002 sportsman 500ho whenever Im at a dead stop either in high or just a little when in low i start give it gas the atv will stutter until it get moving. What do you guys think could be the problem? I took the belt cover off and looked at the belt and saw that it was a small bit of the belt chewed but just on the top layer Kinda like a "V" cut out and the belt was loose. The rest of the belt
ribbed side looked good and when I turned the back wheel of the clutch (not sure what its called) the belt got tight and stayed tight.
Now if it is the belt how do I take it off and put it back on? Does it just slip on and off kinda like putting your bike chain back on after it pops off on ya? Also is there an adjustment to tighten the belt? Sorry for the questions just a little confused and I dont have a repair manual yet. The bike only has about 35 hrs and just had its service done if that matters. Thanks

Does the engine studder? Or does it revv freely and the machine itself studders?

If the machine itself studders while the engine is revving like it should then its a clutch/belt problem.

If the engine studders spits boggs pops and you can feel the machine grabbing then its a carb/intake problem.

Let us know which it is and we'll go from there.

If the belt has started to shred, it won't be long until you finish it off. The easiest way to change the belt it to inbold the rear clutch, and remove it that way. The easiest way to get the new belt on is to force secondary clutch open and slide the belt down inside. This gives you extra belt slack to put it on over the primary clutch, and bolt back together....Hope this helps...
